  • M&M's Pretzel earns product of the year award

    HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- M&M's brand Pretzel Chocolate Candies were honored with the 2011 Product of the Year in the candy and snacks category by Product of the Year USA, Mars Chocolate North America announced.  

    "This award is especially gratifying because it was decided by consumers," said Debra Sandler, chief consumer officer of Mars Chocolate North America.  "We felt confident that the delicious combination of salty and sweet was a winner, but this award solidifies that M&M'S Pretzel are truly irresistible."

  • Stater Bros. profit decreases in fiscal Q1

    San Bernardino, Calif. -- Supermarket retailer Stater Bros. Holdings said Wednesday that net income for the quarter ended Dec. 26 dropped to $1.3 million, compared with net income of $6.7 million in the year-ago period. The prior year results included an after-tax gain of $4.7 million.

    Sales declined 2.3% to $899 million in the first quarter. Same-store sales also decreased 2.3%.

  • Potential cost savings drive energy-efficiency efforts

    Palatine, Ill. -- An overwhelming number (88%) of executives admit to a “moral responsibility” beyond regulatory requirement to make their companies more energy efficient, according to a recent poll of senior executives at Fortune 1000 companies. At the same time, however, 61% of respondents rank potential cost-savings as biggest motivator to save energy at the enterprise-level, outranking both environmental benefits and government regulations.

  • Consumer Reports index finds household financial difficulty rising

    YONKERS, N.Y. -- Consumer Reports announced that its Trouble Tracker Index has climbed for the third straight month to 58.7. The index, which tracks the depth and breadth of financial difficulties among households, has climbed up from 54.2 last month and from 53.4 one year ago.

  • Walmart to offer Verizon iPhone at select stores

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Walmart announced that iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network will be available in select Walmart stores starting Feb. 10.  

     "We're excited to bring iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network, one the most anticipated mobile phone launches in recent history, to Walmart customers," said Gary Severson, SVP home entertainment for Walmart U.S. "As customers continue to embrace smart phone technology, we've added nearly 20 smart phone models to our assortment, including the new Verizon Wireless iPhone 4."

  • Hibbett misses 4Q guidance

    An otherwise exceptional year of sales and profits at Hibbett Sports was soiled somewhat late in the fourth quarter as consumer demand deteriorated, forcing the company to alert investors that it would come up short against earlier guidance. The 767-unit Hibbett chain continued to execute its strategy, but really bad weather in many of the company’s markets coupled with a slower-than-expected flow of tax refunds negatively affected results.

  • DSW to acquire Retail Ventures

    Columbus, Ohio -- DSW said Tuesday that it will acquire its largest shareholder Retail Ventures and turn it into a wholly owned subsidiary, helping to simplify its relationship.

    According to the shoe retailer, the two companies signed a merger agreement, under which DSW will give stockholders 0.435 of a DSW share for each share they hold of Retail Ventures.

    Retail Venture holds a 62% stake in DSW.

    The companies are slated to hold a conference on Wednesday to discuss the deal with investors.

  • Macy's raises $16.25 million through holiday campaigns

    NEW YORK -- Macy’s announced that it has donated $16.25 million to various charitable organizations as a result of its 2010 Thanks For Sharing and Believe holiday campaigns.
