  • Guess Q1 profit down 15%, narrows view

    Los Angeles — Guess Inc. beat first-quarter revenue expectations, even though it also reported a 15% decline in net income. The company said net income fell to $42.7 million in the quarter ended April 30, compared with $50.3 million in the year-ago period.

    Total revenue increased 9.8% to $592.2 million, beating analysts' predictions of $567.7 million. Strength in Asia, where revenue rose 24%, drove the increase. Revenue in Europe also helped, rising 12%. Revenue in North America was the weakest, up 5%.

    Same-store sales fell 3.1% in U.S. dollars.

  • Dollar General making its way to the Golden State

    GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General announced its plans to expand its operations to California in 2012.

    The California announcement comes on the heels of the company’s planned expansions into three new states in 2011 — Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire. California would be Dollar General’s 39th state.

    The company said it plans to serve shoppers in rural, suburban and metropolitan markets.

  • A&P sells 12 Superfresh stores, to close 13 others

    New York —The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), which is working its way through Chapter 11, will close 13 Suprefresh stores in the Baltimore area in  July because it can't find anyone to buy the properties, The Baltimore Sun reported.

  • Big Lots ventures into Canada, 4Q comps slip

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the first time, Big Lots is expanding its retail operations outside of the United States with the announcement that it has agreed to purchase all of the outstanding stock of Liquidation World Inc., an Ontario based retailer which operates 92 closeout stores in Canada. 

  • Fred's net income increases 16%

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's net income increased 16% to $9.5 million, or 24 cents per diluted share, compared with net income of $8.2 million, or 21 cents per diluted share in the year-earlier period.

    The retailer said that total sales rose 3% to $484.4 million from $471.6 million for the same period last year. For comps, Fred's reported a 1% rise on top of a 2.2% increase for the first quarter last year.

    Fred's gross profit for first quarter 2011 increased 1% to $137.9 million from $136.9 million in the prior-year period.

  • HHGregg 4Q profit surges 46%, slows new store growth

    Indianapolis — Electronics and appliances retailer hhgregg Inc. said Thursday that its profit leaped 46% in its fiscal 4Q, to $14.6 million from $10 million in the year-ago period. However, same-store sales tumbled nearly 11% in the company, and the company said it will slow the pace at which it opens new stores in the next fiscal year. Previously, it expected to open 35 to 45 stores in the next year, but now cut the upper range to 40 stores.

  • A tale of two meetings at all-day affair

    Walmart is scheduled to hold its annual shareholders’ meeting one week from today, and the event is a tale of two meetings. One the one hand, there is the pageantry and puffery of the actual shareholders meeting, which runs from 7 a.m. to about 11 a.m. central time. If the company holds true to form the event will be a high-energy, star-studded affair that is long on style and short on substance with a dollop of official business thrown in. The event is designed primarily for the thousands of employees who attend from throughout the U.S.

  • America's Got Talent star gets Target deal

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target announced that it is partnering with soprano singer, Jackie Evancho, for the exclusive, deluxe edition of her first full-length studio album, “Dream With Me.” The deluxe edition, which includes four additional new songs, is currently available for pre-order at Target.com, and will be at Target stores nationwide beginning June 14.
