  • Stop & Shop answers call of cost-conscious customers

    QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop has reintroduced its Guaranteed Value product line in an effort to help customers on a budget.

    The line, which includes about 200 items, touts prices that are an average of 20% to 25% less than national brands. What's more, 60% of the items cost $2 or less. What's more, packaging for items that are part of Guaranteed Value have undergone a makeover, with the yellow, blue and red packaging being replaced with a bright orange and white design that highlights the value offered with each product.

  • JCPenney picks another Apple alumnus for chief technology role

    PLANO, Texas — Another former Apple executive has joined the ranks at JCPenney. The company announced Wednesday that Kristen Blum, a former director of supply chain and International retail for Apple Inc., has been named EVP and chief technology officer, effective Jan. 23. 

    Blum reports to COO Mike Kramer, and has responsibility for the  company's JCP.com business and information technology systems.

    SAN FRANCISCO — In an effort to help the thousands of troops returning home from serving overseas, Banana Republic has announced “Our Duty to You,” a program created to help military personnel prepare for their next professional opportunities. 

  • Wal-Mart seeks end to re-filed gender-bias lawsuit

    San Francisco -- A Tuesday report by Reuters said that Wal-Mart filed a motion on Monday to dismiss a lawsuit filed last October by a regrouping of women whose earlier gender bias class action was ended by the U.S. Supreme Court.

  • Sam's Club launches mobile phone protection service

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam's Club has launched a new program with San Francisco, Calif.-based warranty provider SquareTrade and other partners to offer feature-packed mobile phone protection plans for Sam's Club members. Priced at $59 for standard phones and $99 for smart phones, the protection packages include:

    • Two-year protection for normal failures including battery replacement

    • Accidental damage protection including full liquid immersion with a $49 deductible

  • The top promoted brands of 2011 revealed

    An analysis of retailers’ ad circulars from throughout 2012 conducted by ECRM shows some familiar names dominate the list of top promoted brands and reveals some interesting movements among others.

    The ECRM report shows use of circular print ads grew by 5.5% in 2011 despite increased activity overall in the areas of online, mobile and social.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch taps IBM to expand online business

    Armonk, N.Y. -- IBM announced that Abercrombie & Fitch Co. is working with IBM software to help the company transform its online business to achieve greater speed and efficiency. The initiative is part of Abercombie's strategic goal to expand its direct-to-consumer capabilities and drive its e-commerce business to $1 billion.

  • Kraft gears up for spinoff

    NORTHFIELD, Ill. — Realigning U.S. sales, consolidating U.S. management centers and streamlining corporate and business unit organizations are on the to-do list of Kraft Foods as it prepares to spin off its business in two independent public companies before the end of the year.
