  • Saks goes casual with style

    NEW YORK — Even the most fashionable women like to dress down on occasion, and Saks Fifth Avenue has answered the call by expanding its proprietary offerings into casual wear. The retailer has announced the launch of 9|15, which the company says incorporates runway-centric style to the adventurous and ambitious woman. The line’s debut follows the 2011 launch of the Saks Fifth Avenue Collection, and will be featured in the "Wear Now" area of Saks stores around the country.

  • Something to think about for Christmas 2012

    Sales in the consumer electronics space would have been abysmal in 2011 were it not for tablet and e-readers, according to data from market researcher The NPD Group, which shows Target has an opportunity to gain share.

    Target’s recent moves to deepen its relationship with Apple could be beneficial in that regard, as it was Apple that drove CE activity in 2011 and is likely to do so again in 2012. Currently, Target is not among the top five CE retailers, which NPD lists as Best Buy, Walmart, Apple and a tie between Staples and Amazon.

  • Safeway spins off trio of Genuardi's stores to Weis

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Safeway Inc. said Monday that it has agreed to sell three of its Genuardi's stores in Pennsylvania to grocery chain Weis Markets. The deal follows on the heels of Safeway’s sale of 16 Genuardi’s stores to Giant Food Stores.

    The three stores are located in Doylestown, Norristown, and Conshohocken. Safeway said it will continue to operate the group until the transaction closes. No firm date has been announced.

  • Supervalu to roll out new private-label brand to independent grocer base

    LAS VEGAS — Supervalu on Monday announced that its new Essential Everyday private-label brand — to include more than 2,400 products by early 2013 — now is available in select independent retail locations.

    “Early results have shown that Essential Everyday is performing very well at our 1,100 Supervalu-owned stores, and we believe that our independent retailers will see a positive customer response as well," stated Leon Bergmann, president of Supervalu's independent business.

  • NPD unveils kids' top play items

    PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — The NPD Group unveiled the top current favorite play items among children ages 14 years and younger.

    After compiling 2,958 mentions, NPD revealed the top items included Lego, laptop, Nintendo Wii, toy cars, Xbox, books, video games, Nintendo DS, Barbie and iPod, while the top five product categories included toys (54%), video games (20%), consumer electronics (12%), sporting goods (5%) and books (3%).

  • Saks to deploy mobile-robotic fulfillment system in new DC

    New York City -- Saks Inc. will expand its distribution and fulfillment capacity, adding a new facility in Tennessee in 2012.

    The new center will occupy approximately 564,000 sq. ft. of leased space and will be located in LaVergne, Tenn. It will be equipped with a sophisticated mobile-robotic fulfillment system that has been successfully deployed in Saks’ Maryland facility.

    Saks expects the Tennessee facility to be operational by August 2012.
