  • Recall in Aisle 5! The Importance of Retailers’ Compliance With Consumer Product Safety Regulations

    The rapidly changing world of consumer product safety is increasingly fraught with pitfalls for both retailers and manufacturers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) made several significant changes to the law by instituting more onerous reporting obligations, heavier fines for failing to report, and prohibiting the sale of a recalled product, just to name a few. But the news isn’t all bad.

  • Former PepsiCo exec sees light at new firm

    Jeremy Cage was named CEO of the global LED lighting firm Lighting Science Group.

    Cage, 48, was selected to lead the company based on his experience in building major brands, his success in developing commercially-appealing technologies and bringing them to market, as well as his distinguished track record of strengthening business models and improving operational efficiencies, according to a statement by Lighting Science Group.

    Cage replaces Brad Knight, who served as interim CEO while the board worked with an executive search firm. Knight will continue to serve as COO.

  • Gift card sales to top $110 billion

    Boston -- A report issued Monday by CEB TowerGroup found that sales of gift cards will surpass $110 billion and spillage will drop 20% to $1.7 billion.

    Propelling gift card sales past the $100 billion dollar mark is an increase in open loop gift cards purchases like those offered by American Express, Visa, Mastercard and Discover ($40 billion), restaurant gift cards ($19 billion) and merchant cards ($36 billion).

  • Footwear founder donates book proceeds

    LOS ANGELES — Blake Mycoskie, founder of the Toms shoe brand, has donated 100% of the proceeds from his bestselling book “Start Something That Matters.”

    Mycoskie has established the Start Something That Matters Foundation with the book’s proceeds, approximately $300,000, to benefit social entrepreneurs and students around the world. The first three recipient organizations of the new fund are the Dell Social Innovation Challenge, Echoing Green and GOOD.is.

    Boca Raton, Fla. -- Office Depot has added PayPal to its selection of online payment options, giving customers a secure way to pay for purchases.   

    Using PayPal on the chain’s website simplifies the online checkout process by providing shoppers with a quick and secure option to pay for purchases without sharing financial information, Staples said.

  • Dollar General gets into online gaming

    ATLANTA — Dollar General is teaming up with InComm, a prepaid product and transaction services provider, to make life easier for online gamers.

    Dollar General will offer Microsoft Xbox LIVE via PIN-on-receipt delivery across its network of more than 10,000 stores, making it easier for consumers to purchase Xbox LIVE points and Xbox LIVE Gold Memberships directly at the register, through InComm's recently launched Digital Delivery Application.

    FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Former Kellogg Company executive Carlos Canals has joined Ciao Bella as CEO.

    Ciao Bella is a gelato and sorbet brand that recently added Greek frozen yogurt to its dessert lineup.

  • Bon-Ton Stores to pay $450,000 in civil penalty related to error with drawstrings

    New York -- An issue related to drawstrings has resulted in Bon-Ton Stores agreeing to pay a civil penalty in the amount of $450,000.

    The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission alleges that the fashion retailer knowingly failed to report to the commission that its children's hooded jackets and sweatshirts were sold with drawstrings through the hood. The penalty agreement has been provisionally accepted by the commission in a 3-0 vote.
