Another retailer enters Prime Day battlefield

7/11/2016

Walmart is not the only big-name retailer preparing a July 12 online sales extravaganza.

Toys “R” Us is launching an online discount event so simple even a child could take advantage of it. All day Tuesday, July 12, shoppers on the Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us e-commerce sites can receive 15% off regular-priced items. There will also be more than 50,000 toys and baby products on sale sitewide.

No membership in any loyalty or shipping program will be required to take advantage of any of the special deals. The retailer will offer its standard free shipping for orders of $19 or more. In a short announcement on its e-commerce site, Toys “R” Us couldn’t resist poking a little fun at Amazon’s Prime Day promotion, which requires Prime membership.

“$3,000 annually in homeowners association fees, $50 a year for wholesale club, $30 a month for the gym, $9 a day for a beach badge… that got us thinking, why should only members enjoy all the fun?” states the release.

Walmart is also tweaking Amazon for its membership-based Prime Day event. The retailer decided to abandon an earlier requirement that shoppers join its ShippingPass program to receive free shipping on all orders during its own mid-July online sales promotion. Neither Walmart nor Toys ‘R Us stands to put any serious dent into Amazon’s Prime Day profits, but should see their own satisfactory sales bump on what is shaping up to be an extremely busy day for e-commerce.
