  • 99 Cents Only sees slight 4Q comps growth

    CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — 99 Cents Only Stores announced that retail sales for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011, a 14-week period, were $366.4 million, compared with $328.6 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010, a 13-week period. The additional week included in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 contributed an additional $26.9 million of retail sales, the company reported. Same-store sales, calculated on a comparable 13-week period, increased 0.5%

  • Target reveals initial locations in Canada

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target has unveiled the first wave of the Zellers sites it will be taking over in Canada, representing 105 locations in all 10 Canadian provinces. The vast majority of the sites will become Target stores after securing the necessary construction approval for extensive renovation. The stores will open beginning in 2013.

  • Mega Brands to create Thomas & Friends construction sets through renewed licensing deal

    MONTREAL — Mega Brands announced that it has extended its licensing agreement with Hit Entertainment to  develop construction sets based on Thomas & Friends.

    Under the expanded contract, Mega Brands is granted the global rights to create all-new construction toy sets based on the exciting world of Thomas & Friends, including new iconic characters and Island of Sodor destinations straight from the popular long-running television series, according to a press release.

  • Joplin tornado victims get help from Walmart

    Walmart has pledged $1 million in relief efforts to help the tornado victims in Joplin, Mo. It also is working to direct truckloads of water, food and other basic items to Joplin.

    The company reported that its Joplin store number 59 was able to implement its severe weather safety plan and help save hundreds of lives. However, the Walmart store near Rangeline Road was significantly damaged, as the company reported the tornado went through the building causing some injuries and fatalities.

  • Tiffany shines as Q1 profit surges 25%

    New York — Tiffany & Co. said Thursday its first-quarter profit rose 25% on higher revenue across all regions worldwide. The results beat expectations and the company raised its forecast for the year above current Wall Street estimates.

    Tiffany net income rose to $81.1 million for the three months ended April 30, up from $64.4 million a year earlier.

    Revenue jumped 20% to $761 million from $633.6 million last year, sharply higher than analyst predictions of $702.6 million.

    Walmart CFO Charles Holley participated in the Citi Global Consumer Conference this past Tuesday, and he had the challenge of appearing just one week after Walmart released first-quarter results. Given the timing, it would have been reasonable to expect that he wouldn’t have a lot of new information to share, and while he certainly covered a lot of familiar ground, there was one area that stood out.

  • Big Lots cuts outlook; to acquire Canada’s Liquidation World

    Columbus, Ohio — Big Lots on Thursday trimmed its expectations for the year amid a fall in first-quarter earnings. In a separate statement, Big Lots said it signed an agreement to buy the Canadian closeout retail chain Liquidation World.

    Based in Brantford, Ontario, Liquidation World operates 92 stores in Canada. It is Big Lots’ first expansion outside of the United States

    Big Lots posted earnings of $52.5 million for the period ended April 30, compared with $55.9 million a year earlier.
