  • Tough quarter for Toys "R" Us

    The nation's largest toy store retailer saw its sales decline and net loss widen in a rough first quarter. For the quarter ended April 29, Toys "R" Us reported a net loss of $164 million. That's up from net loss of $126 million in the year-ago period.

    A recent job listing by Amazon has raised speculation that the online giant plans to roll out its checkout-free convenience store concept, Amazon Go.    The online giant recently posted a job listing seeking a senior real estate manager for Amazon Go. The role will be based in Seattle and will include travel.

  • Supervalu embarks on IT transformation

    Eager to strengthen operations across its enterprise, Supervalu is moving to the cloud.   Through a strategic relationship with Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS), the grocery company is replacing its mainframe technology infrastructure with a new mainframe platform that will offer cloud, back-up, and other solutions and services. The new configuration is designed to improve operations across the independent retailers it supports.   
  • Amazon in new rewards program for Prime

    Amazon is giving shoppers another reason to sign up for Prime—and a reason not to use credit cards.   The online giant is launching a new program, called Amazon Prime Reload, that allows Prime members to earn 2% bonus every time they reload their Amazon gift card balance with cash from their checking account and debit card. The bonus is given in the form of rewards that can be used to make purchases on Amazon.   
  • Target and Cartwheel apps to merge

    Target upping its mobile game.    In a move that will eliminate customer confusion over the retailer's two separate apps, the discounter will move its Cartwheel savings app into the main Target app. The integration will happen this summer.  
  • Warehouse club operator entering new territory

    BJ's Wholesale Club is set to open its first location in South Carolina.   The retailer will celebrate the grand opening of its new location in Summerville, South Carolina on Saturday, June 10. The store, which marks BJ's expansion into South Carolina, is located at the intersection of Interstate 26 and North Main Street, Summerville's primary retail corridor.  
  • Study: Sales associates not well-equipped to perform job

    Digital retailing is intensifying, yet retail associates still don’t have the technology they need to serve customers when they visit in-store.   That's according to “The 2017 Retail Associate Technology Study,” from Salesfloor. The report, which surveyed 254 North American retail associates across a variety of product categories, compensation models and store sizes, explores the connection between store-level employees and the technology they use to serve customers.
