  • Walmart Canada launches grocery pickup option

    Mississauga, Canada – Walmart Canada is looking to extend its omnichannel grocery experience.

    Starting on July 7, customers will be able to place online grocery orders for select product, including fresh food, for pickup in six stores in the Ottawa area. An additional five stores will offer the service starting on July 21. The pickup fee is $3 and customers will be able to order up to 21 days in advance.

  • Report: Sycamore Partners puts Belk on shopping list?

    Charlotte, N.C. – Family-owned Belk Inc., which hired Goldman Sachs in April to explore “strategic alternatives,” may have landed on a high-end shopping list. According to Reuters, New York-based equity firm Sycamore Partners may be considering bidding $3 billion to $3.5 billion for Belk.

    Belk operates about 300 stores and averages about $4 billion in annual sales. In the first quarter of fiscal 2015, Belk reported earnings of $21.8 million and sales of $958 million, both of which were year-over-year improvements.

    Chicago -- Marbles: The Brain Store is in an expansion mode.

    The retailer has opened a new store in Washington D.C., at National Harbor, the waterfront shopping and entertainment district on the Potomac River. It is Marbles’ second location in the Washington, D.C., area and its third to open this summer, with new stores debuting in Times Square in New York City and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, marking its first location in the southern region.

  • Academy Sports hits store count landmark, supports growth

    Katy, Texas – Academy Sports + Outdoors is hitting a landmark in its store count.

    The sporting goods chain will open its 200th store in Tupelo, Mississippi on July 3.

    The Tupelo store will be approximately 63,000-sq.-ft. and will bring 100 new jobs to the area. This will be the first location in Tupelo and the fifth store in Mississippi.

  • PayPal is in the money with new acquisition

    San Jose, Calif. – PayPal Inc. is getting itself “in the money” with a major acquisition as the company prepares for its impending July 17 split from eBay Inc.

    PayPal will purchase digital money transfer service Xoom Corp. for $25 per share in cash, or about $890 million.
