  • A.T. Kearney study sees big opportunity for retailers in aging consumers

    Chicago -- Meeting the needs of aging consumers offers retailers and brand marketers a major opportunity going forward, according to a new study by global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney.

    Mature consumers form a worldwide market segment that spent $8 trillion in 2010 and will be spending $15 trillion annually by the end of this decade, the study estimated. Based on current worldwide demographic trajectories, in five years there will be more people over the age of 60 than under five; in 30 years, there will be more people over 60 than under 16.

  • Target.com cracks comScore top 50

    Target’s website was among the 50 most heavily trafficked U.S. web properties during August, according to comScore Media Metrix. The online measurement service showed Target.com with 26.5 million unique visitors for the month, which earned it the 46th position on the list.

  • Dick’s Sporting Goods opening stores in New York and Georgia

    Pittsburgh -- Dick’s Sporting Goods announced it is opening two stores this week, in Yonkers, N.Y., and Norcross, Ga.

    The Yonkers location will be the retailer's 32nd store in the state of New York and their 458th nationwide. The Norcross location will be the retailer's fifteenth store in the state of Georgia and their 459th nationwide.

     

  • KFC awarded LEED Gold

    New York City -- A KFC restaurant in Indianapolis has been awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the state's first LEED-certified retail establishment.

  • Whitman takes over as HP CEO

    PALO ALTO, Calif. — HP announced that its board of directors has appointed Meg Whitman as president and CEO.

    In addition, Ray Lane has moved from non-executive chairman to executive chairman of the board of directors, and the board intends to appoint a lead independent director promptly. These leadership appointments are effective immediately and follow the decision that Léo Apotheker step down as president and CEO and resign as a director of the company, the company reported.

  • Walgreens announces 100th solar power installation

    Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreens announced Friday its 100th rooftop solar power system installation, marking the drugstore retailer’s continued commitment to sustainability.

    The announcement of the latest installation, in Mason, Ohio, comes on the heels of Wednesday’s report that Walgreens would complete one of the nation’s largest solar energy rollouts, contracting with SoCore Energy to complete 90 Ohio solar installations – the first 53 by Nov. 11.

  • Target’s Missoni ‘Mayhem’

    The fashion blogosphere have been overrun with complaints about how Target botched the launch of its latest and exclusive limited-time collection, Missoni for Target. And shoppers across the nation have taken to Facebook, Twitter and other sites to share their frustrations. The folks who seem to be the most put-out are those that ordered goods online. After experiencing long delays and going through any number of hurdles before they were even able to place an order, many are now being told that their orders will be delayed or, even worse, cancelled.

  • Nielsen’s Holiday Shopping Sales Survey advises retailers to market early

    Schaumburg, Ill. -- Online, club, dollar, toy and consumer electronics retailers, as well as categories such as gift cards, technology, vacations and toys, will all perform well this season, according to Nielsen’s fourth-annual Holiday Shopping Sales Survey.

    Across all income levels, only 5% of U.S. households plan to spend more this year, with affluent households (those earning $100,000 or more) leading the way.
