  • Report: U.S. consumer confidence hits near-record low

    New York City -- A report released Thursday by Bloomberg said that consumer confidence in the United States slumped last week to the second-lowest level on record.

    The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index dropped to minus 53 in the period ended Sept. 25 from minus 52.1 the prior week. Similar readings were reached three times in the first half of 2009 and surpassed only by all-time lows of minus 54 plumbed in November 2008 and again in January 2009.

  • Sears financial exec hired by JPMorgan to develop payment services

    New York City -- JPMorgan said Thursday it has hired Sears Holdings Corp. president of financial services Susan Ehrlich as a senior VP.

    Ehrlich will be charged to help create new payments services for customers, retailers and small businesses.

    Ehrlich managed Sears’s expansion of payment and credit products over a five-year period for the retailer.

  • Rite Aid comps increase 1.3% in September

    CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid same-store sales increased by 1.3% in September, compared with September 2010, the company said Thursday.

    During the four-week period that ended Saturday, front-end same-store sales were down 0.5%, though pharmacy same-store sales increased 2.1%, including a 143-basis point negative effect from new generic introductions.

    The softer sales for the month were expected by the company's management and analysts alike, with analyst John Heinbockel of Guggenheim Partners attributing them to Hurricane Irene and the slow start of the allergy season.

  • Epay teams with Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Assurance for prepaid wireless

    Leawood, Kan. -- Epay, a division of electronic payments provider Euronet Worldwide, said Thursday it has forged an exclusive agreement to process prepaid mobile airtime transactions in the independent retail segment for Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile USA and Assurance Wireless.

    These no-contract wireless brands are owned by Sprint.

  • North American Video launches service contract for A&P

    Brick, N.J. -- North American Video said Thursday that it has begun servicing and maintenance of the video surveillance systems in all retail outlets across The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co.

    A total of over 330 stores across seven states are part of the service program; retail banners include A&P, The Food Emporium, Pathmark, SuperFresh, Best Cellars, Waldbaum’s and Food Basics.

  • Macy’s speeding up adoption of RFID technology

    Cincinnati -- Macy’s is ramping up its adoption of RFID technology. The retailer announced that its Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores are adopting the technology on an accelerated timeline to more precisely manage item-level merchandise inventories. The company expects that by the third quarter of 2012, it will begin using RFID in all stores nationwide to count size-intensive replenishment goods, which accounts for about 30% of the company’s total sales.
