    Based on current worldwide demographic trajectories, in five years there will be more people over the age of 60 than under five. In 30 years, there will be more people over 60 than under 16. In fact, the fastest-growing age group worldwide in this century will be people over the age of 60.

  • Study uncovers lack of cyber safety among mobile users

    Washington, D.C. -- A study released Wednesday by the National Cyber Security Alliance and McAfee revealed a false sense of cyber security for mobile users.

    The survey, conducted by Zogby International, found that 72% of Americans have never installed data protection applications or security software on their smartphones in order to protect against data loss or against viruses and malware.

  • Venhuizen promoted at Ace Hardware

    Ace Hardware appointed John Venhuizen chief operating officer, effective Jan. 1, 2012.

    Venhuizen has spent nearly two decades with Ace and most recently served as executive VP supply chain, information technology (IT) and international. In this position, he helped grow the number of Ace stores around the world, as well as create a variety of successful support and incentive programs for retailers.

  • ShopperTrak report: Holiday sales increase 22% for week ending Dec. 17

    Chicago -- A report released Wednesday by ShopperTrak found that holiday shoppers boosted sales 21.7% over the previous week and 1.3% over the same week last year.

    According to ShopperTrak, sales increases during the week ending Dec. 17 made this December on pace to have higher retail sales than last year. Month-to-date figures are up 0.5% over December 2010.

  • Consumer Trendspotting

    It’s a new year, and with it comes the opportunity for a fresh start for retailers as well as consumers. As in new years past, I’m inundated with a flurry of trend forecasts, surveys and predictions. One of the more interesting ones to cross my desk comes from JWT, New York, one of the world’s biggest marketing communications brands. It is the firm’s seventh annual year-end forecast of trends that will impact consumer behavior going forward.
