    New York — American Express has launched a new venture with Twitter, that could lead to a whole new category of shopping.

  • Study: Dollar stores may benefit from increased payroll tax

    Chicago -- A new Symphony Consulting survey found that the new 2% increase in payroll tax is causing a major shopping behavioral change among lower-income families.

    A division of SymphonyIRI Group, Symphony Consulting revealed Monday that dollar stores may be the biggest winners in the battle for the lower-income spenders’ purchasing power.

  • OfficeMax gets $129M in proceeds from investment

    Naperville, Ill. -- OfficeMax has received approximately $129 million in cash proceeds related to its October 2004 investment in Boise Cascade Holdings, LLC. Since 2004, OfficeMax has held two classes of securities in BCH, non-voting equity securities ("Series A Units") and voting equity securities ("Series B Units").

  • Walgreens rolls out new wireless vehicle management technology

    Woodcliff Lake, N.J. -- Wireless solution provider I.D. Systems said Tuesday it has received a series of purchase orders from Walgreens for the latest generation of its PowerFleet wireless Vehicle Management System, to be deployed on hundreds of material handling vehicles across multiple Walgreens distribution centers.

    Walgreens originally implemented I.D. Systems' wireless technology in 2003 and is systematically upgrading more than a dozen of its facilities to the current generation of PowerFleet VMS.

     

  • Amazon, QVC, Apple lead in mobile satisfaction; Target among most improved

    Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Amazon has extended its domination of e-retail into the mobile platform, according to the ForeSee Mobile Satisfaction Index: Holiday Retail Edition, released on Tuesday by ForeSee.

    In a survey of more than 6,200 consumers collected during the peak holiday shopping season between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Amazon scored highest among 25 of the top mobile commerce companies.

  • First Data: Consumer card spending growth robust in January

    Atlanta -- A report released Tuesday by First Data Corp. found that dollar volume growth rebounded in January, improving to 6.2% versus 4% in December despite the payroll tax increase.

    The First Data SpendTrend report, which tracks same-store consumer spending by credit, signature debit, PIN debit, EBT, closed-loop prepaid cards and checks at U.S. merchant locations, found that improved retail spending was a large contributor to the January growth.   

  • CVS Caremark names former Staples exec as digital chief

    Woonsocket, R.I. -- CVS Caremark said Monday it has named Brian Tilzer as SVP, chief digital officer for the drugstore chain.

    Tilzer, previously SVP global e-commerce for Staples, is charged with developing and leading CVS digital innovation efforts and connecting current and future digital initiatives.

     

  • MasterCard partners with Mu Sigma to launch analytics products

    Purchase, N.Y. — MasterCard Advisors, a division of MasterCard, and analytics firm Mu Sigma announced a new partnership to develop analytic products toward solving business challenges such as acquiring customers and increasing customer loyalty.

    As part of the partnership, MasterCard has acquired an equity stake in Mu Sigma. Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
