  • FTC: Identity theft rises sharply

    Retailers looking for validation that their data privacy efforts matter can look to disturbing new figures from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

    According to data released by the FTC, it received more than 490,000 consumer complaints about identity theft in 2015. This is a 47% increase from the number of identity theft complaints in 2014. The Department of Justice estimates that in total, 17.6 million Americans were victims of identity theft in 2014.

  • Survey: Consumers identify major purchase inhibitor

    A lot of attention has been paid to purchase drivers, but what about factors that prevent consumers from buying your products?

    A new study of 900 U.S. consumers conducted in November 2015 by international law firm Morrison & Foerster indicates that concerns about privacy are reducing the number of purchases customers make.

    At least once in the last 12 months, more than one-third (35%) of respondents indicated that they had decided not to purchases products or services from a company because of privacy concerns.

  • Report: Wendy’s suffers possible data breach

    Fast-food chain The Wendy’s Co. may be the first big retailer to suffer a public data security incident in 2016.

    According to the Krebs on Security blog, Wendy’s is investigating possible fraudulent activity related to credit cards used at some of its store locations. Wendy’s was notified earlier this month by partners in the payment industry that unusual activity was occurring.

  • Walmart takes Amazon battle to the cloud

    Walmart is launching a new open source cloud platform that seems aimed at hurting Amazon Web Services (AWS) as much as helping retailers.

    The cloud management and application lifecycle management platform, known as OneOps, has been under development at the @WalmartLabs innovation center for two years. Walmart has used OneOps internally to support efforts such as improving its website and deploying online grocery features.

  • Report: Walmart merging tech teams to create new group

    Wal-Mart Stores’ online push continues.

    The retailer will merge its Bentonville-based information systems division with its Silicon Valley-based technology unit, zWalmartLabs, next month, Reuters reported.

    The merger will create a new group called Walmart Technology.

    The chain’s CIO, Karenann Terrell, and chief technical officer, Jeremy King, will continue to lead the information systems group and zWalmartLabs, respectively. Both will report to Neil Ashe, head of the chain e-commerce division, the report said.

  • Sally Beauty predicts improved store operations

    Sally Beauty Supply is applying analytics to the literal consumer touchpoint where revenues are made -- the point of sale.

    Sally Beauty is teaming up with prescriptive analytics provider Profitect Inc. to analyze sales and other data recorded at its in-store POS terminals. After a two-week implementation, Sally Beauty now has better insight into trends and patterns associated with areas of leaking profit, including shrink, damage, costing errors, waste, process mistakes, and lack of training.

    Retailers still working on compliance with the EMV chip-based card payment standard have a new technology option.

    Verifone is partnering with Microsoft to provide comprehensive EMV-ready payment as a service solutions certified for Microsoft Dynamics AX for retail and commerce solutions.

    The offering bundles payment hardware, software and support services into a single integrated solution, enabling retailers to centrally manage their entire payment system.
