Chelmsford, Mass. -- The Kronos Retail Labor Index edged down to 3.8% in October 2011, following an upwardly revised 4.2% for September, which was the first reading above 4% since October 2008. Even with the small decline in October, the Retail labor Index remains well above the series low of 2.8% in January 2011.

In an effort to help merchants both achieve and maintain PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliance, technologies for cardholder data security have become more prevalent. Merchants should view PCI compliance as an ongoing business requirement with continuously evolving needs and mandated changes, not just a one-time, stand-alone IT issue. ATLANTA — OfficeMax is using RedPrairie Corp.'s Enterprise Workforce Management tool to boost labor efficiencies and manage costs enterprise-wide across its supply chain and retail stores, RedPrairie announced in a company press release.

RedPrairie’s Enterprise Workforce Management solution enables retailers to manage their workforce holistically addressing time and attendance, forecasting, scheduling, labor standards, execution management and learning management, according to the company. 

New York City -- Oracle Corp. said it will acquire RightNow Technologies, a leading provider of cloud-based customer service, for approximately $1.5 billion. The acquisition follows Oracle's recent announcement that it is purchasing Endeca, a provider of unstructured data management, web commerce and BI solutions.

RightNow focuses on customer experience across contact channels. Its Customer Service Cloud is geared at customer interactions and data for call centers, social networks and the web, according to RightNow’s website.

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Office Depot announced that the company’s global headquarters, located in Boca Raton, Fla., has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Energy Star certification. The certification signifies that the building performs in the top 25% of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA, Office Depot reported.

San Jose, Calif. -- eBay, which reported income and revenue growth for its third quarter, is seeing increased strength in its mobile business as more customers are turning to their smartphones to shop.

eBay reported that revenue for the third quarter ended Sept. 30 increased 32% to $3 billion, compared with the same period of 2010. The company reported third-quarter net income on a GAAP basis of $490.5 million, up from $432 million in the year-ago period.
