  • Consumer spending up slightly in October as incomes advance

    New York City -- Consumer spending rose less than forecast in October as Americans even as personal incomes showed the biggest gains in seven months.

    The Commerce Department said Wednesday that spending increased 0.1% last month, the poorest gain in four months. But incomes increased 0.4%, the best showing since March, with private wages and salaries driving the income gain.

    Most economists had forecast spending to rise by 0.3% and income by 0.2%.
     

  • Chico's FAS net income dips in Q3

    Fort Myers, Fla. -- Chico's FAS reported Tuesday that net income for the quarter ended Oct. 29 fell to $26.5 million, compared with $28.8 million a year earlier. Results include costs associated with the company’s acquisition of Boston Proper.

    Net sales for the quarter increased 11.5% to $538.5 million, from $483 million. Same-store sales increased 3.7%. By brand, Chico's/Soma Intimates same-store sales increased 0.6

  • DSW Q3 profit beats Street, raises full-year outlook

    Columbus, Ohio -- DSW Inc. reported Tuesday that net income increased to $53.7 million in the third quarter, up from $35.5 million a year earlier.

    Sales rose 8.5% to $530.7 million, from $489.3 million. Same-store sales increased 5.2%.

    The shoe retailer cited strong boot sales for the performance surge. “We are confident in our strategies and continue to expect fiscal 2011 to represent a strong year of growth, and as a result we have increased our annual guidance," said Mike MacDonald president and CEO.
     

  • Levin tenant survey: Most are optimistic for the holidays

    North Plainfield, N.J. -- Shopping center owner and manager Levin Management Corp., in its annual pre-holiday survey, found that more than a third of its retail tenants predict 2011 sales will be higher than 2010’s, while just 18.9% project a drop in sales for the 2011 holiday season.

    The remaining 44.2% expect this year’s holiday sales to mirror last year’s.

  • Tops reports Q3 results

    WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — Regional supermarket chain Tops Markets reported a 3.6% increase in net sales for the period ended Oct. 8.

    Third-quarter net sales rose $18.7 million to $538.6 million, the retailer said. Supermarket sales (excluding gasoline sales) totaled $491 million, up $7.5 million, or 1.5%, compared with the year-ago period.

  • Fred's Q3 profit rises 16%

    Memphis, Tenn. -- Discounter Fred's Inc. reported Tuesday that profit for the third quarter rose 16% to $9 million, compared with $7.8 million a year earlier.

    Revenue increased 2% to $444.4 million from $435 million last year, missing Wall Street’s expected $446.5 million in revenue.

    Same-store sales rose 1.5%.

  • Target tops own, analysts’ profit expectations

    Third-quarter results at Target were pretty darn good, but they were actually even better than they seemed depending on how one compares this year’s number to the prior year performance. Profits grew 10.2% to 82 cents in the third quarter compared with 74 cents the prior year, thanks to a 4.3% same-store sales increase and ongoing improvement in the company’s credit card business.
