We comb through annual reports and regulatory filings to arrive at our annual ranking of the best retailers in America based on annual sales, number of stores, e-commerce capabilities, profitability and operational efficiency. In addition to the annual rankings based on financial and operational metrics, The Top 100 also features: 

  • Cabela's beats Street with revenue and profit surges, 13 new stores planned for 2015

    Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela's Inc. saw profit rise 6.9% to $27.5 million in the first quarter, topping Wall Street expectations. Revenue of $827.1 million, a 14% increase, also exceeded Street forecasts.

    By segment, retail store revenue increased 18.9% to $524.4 million; direct revenue decreased 3.3% to $173.5 million; and Financial Services revenue increased 24.7% to $122.9 million.

    During the period, consolidated same-store sales decreased 1.3%.

  • O'Reilly expansion stays on track

    O’Reilly Automotive says it plans to build a new distribution center in Texas to help support its 205 new stores in 2015.

    America’s second largest retailer in the automotive aftermarket industry said its expansion plans are on track after profit rose in the first quarter on higher sales and better margins, continuing a trend of 15% or greater profit growth for the past six years.

  • eBay beats Street with Q1 results

    San Jose, Calif. – eBay Inc. topped Wall Street expectations for both profit and revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 2015. Growth in transactions and efforts to control expenses helped produce net income of $626 million, compared to a net loss of $2.33 billion the same quarter a year earlier.

  • Roche Bros. deploying NCR solution to strengthen payment security

    Duluth, Ga. -- NCR Corp. announced supermarket chain Roche Bros. has implemented NCR’s Connected Payments to help with its payments security. Massachusetts-based Roche Bros. is using the cloud-based payment solution to manage all of its daily operations related to payments across its network of stores.

    Verizon is out with its annual cyber security report and while the findings are disturbing the good news is that retailers can thwart many a breach attempt by focusing on a handful of basic attack patterns.

    Verizon's "2015 Data Breach Investigations Report," reveals that cyberattacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but many criminals still rely on decades-old techniques such as phishing and hacking. In fact, 70% of cyberattacks use a combination of these techniques and involve a secondary victim which adds complexity to a breach, according to the report.

    New York -- Retailers with stores in Denver, San Antonio, Nashville, Fort Lauderdale and Dallas might see some strong sales in the months ahead based on a new report, which identifies those cities as the nation’s hottest housing market.

  • Study: Electronic payments up 5% in 2014

    Herndon, Va. - In 2014, ACH (automated clearing house) volume grew to almost 23 billion electronic payments, an increase of almost 5%, or 1 billion transactions, from 2013 volume. According to new statistics released by NACHA — The Electronic Payments Association, a total of more than $40 trillion was transferred via NACHA’s ACH Network in 2014, increasing more than 3% compared to 2013.
