  • Retail container imports to increase 8.5% in September; strong holiday numbers expected

    Washington, D.C. -- Import cargo volume at the nation’s major retail container ports is expected to increase 8.5% in September compared with the same month last year, and strong increases are expected into the holiday season despite talk of a possible strike at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

  • Report: Macy’s rolling out new order fulfillment system

    New York -- Macy’s Inc. is rolling out a new order fulfillment system that lays the groundwork for same-day delivery services by leveraging the proximity of its physical store locations to its customers, according to a report on the Huffington Post.

    To date, 280 stores have been outfitted to provide shipping services.

    Online retail giants Amazon and eBay are moving in the same direction, the report said.

    AUSTIN, Texas — Newgistics, a provider of small parcel delivery, returns management and freight shipping services, has acquired AtLast Fulfillment, a Colorado-based provider of fulfillment and warehousing solutions.

    DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — Hub Group, a light freight transportation management company has been named a 2012 Partner in Transformation for Sears Holdings. Hub Group received the award for financial and operational discipline.

    Raleigh, N.C. -- Nearly one-third of distribution centers (DCs) are entirely outsourced, according to the Supply Chain Metrics Report by the Tompkins Supply Chain Consortium.

  • PetSmart to open new DC in Berks County

    Harrisburg, Pa. -- Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett said Thursday that PetSmart will open a new distribution center in Bethel Township, Berks County, Pa.
     
    PetSmart will construct an 870,000-sq.-ft. distribution center in Berks Park 78, a new industrial park located in Bethel Township. The company will start construction on the $50 million distribution center in the fall of 2012, with completion expected in first quarter 2014.

    The project is expected to create at least 500 new jobs by 2016.
