    Regional discounter ALCO Stores succumbed to market pressures and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

    The operator of 198 stores in 23 states was founded in 1901 and sought to serve small underserved markets with a broad range of value priced merchandise.

  • Saving water equals sales at Home Depot

    Water conservation is big business for the nation’s largest home improvement retailer who earned accolades from the Environmental Protection Agency for selling nearly 13 million WaterSense devices.

    The EPA named Home Depot a 2014 WaterSense Partner of the year for selling nearly 13 million WaterSense labeled products which helped customers save an estimated 42.5 billion gallons of water and more than $358 million in water related utility costs. The retailer said the water saved is enough to supply 291,000 U.S. homes for a full year.

  • Lids Sports Group acquires 28-store Jersey City Canada

    Indianapolis – Lids Sports Group has acquired Jersey City Canada, a licensed sports apparel, headwear and novelty company operating 28 stores across four Canadian provinces. In addition, the acquisition includes nine headwear-only Capz stores, and two websites.  
  • Survey: Retailers disappoint consumers with online services

    London - Online retailers provide delivery options shoppers don’t want, and don’t offer the ones they do. According to new research from software company OrderDynamics and Opinion Matters, more than half of online shoppers (54%) want a named delivery date, but only 15% of retailers currently offer it.  
  • NRF: Imports to surge before holidays

    Washington, D.C. - Import cargo volume at the nation’s major retail container ports is expected to see a final surge and set a new monthly record in October as the holiday season approaches. According to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates, import volume at U.S. ports covered by the Global Port Tracker report is expected to total 1.53 million containers in October, topping the 1.52 million monthly record set in August.
