  • Jo-Ann makes executive moves

    Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, the nation’s leading fabric and craft specialty retailer, has announced two significant organizational changes in the merchandising and marketing areas.

    Megan Featherston, formerly senior vice president, merchandising, at Jo-Ann, has been promoted to executive vice president, merchandising & marketing. In her new role, Megan will oversee the retailer’s merchandising, marketing, Joann.com and business intelligence and analytics teams.

  • Accenture completes Javelin purchase

    London - Accenture has completed its acquisition of Javelin Group, a retail strategy consulting and digital transformation services provider. The acquisition was first announced on May 18, 2015.

    Javelin Group will be a distinct business unit within Accenture Strategy. Accenture will leverage Javelin’s specialist retail strategy and digital capabilities to help retailers accelerate digital transformation.

  • Birks Group Q1 loss grows

    Montreal - Birks Group Inc., which operates 47 luxury jewelry stores in Canada, Florida and Georgia, reported a growing net loss in first quarter 2015 despite improvements in net and same-store sales. Net loss totaled $8.63 million, up from $5.8 million the same period a year earlier.

    Although net sales rose 7% to $301.64 million from $281.16 million, increases in cost of sales, selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses, restructuring, debt extinguishment and asset impairment helped expand net loss. Same-store sales increased 16%.

  • Target vet joining Rite Aid’s executive ranks

    Camp Hill, Pa. -- A veteran Target executive is joining Rite Aid.

    The drugstore chain on Monday announced that Bryan Everett is joining Rite Aid as executive VP store operations, effective Aug. 3. He will be responsible for all operations at the company’s nearly 4,600 chainwide stores and will report to Rite Aid president and COO Ken Martindale.

  • Peapod debuts 'farm in a box'

    As food delivery increases in popularity among U.S. consumers, online grocer Peapod is launching an innovative service focused on produce.

    The company is going to start offering the Peapod Local Farm Box. Throughout the summer, Peapod customers in New York City, New Jersey, Eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin will have the option of adding a box of produce from local farms to their virtual grocery cart.

  • Bon-Ton selling stores to help pay off loan

    The Bon-Ton Stores is looking to help pay off a $105 million mortgage on 12 properties with a new deal.

    The retailer announced it will sell six properties to CPA:17-Global, a real estate investment trust of W.P. Carey, and lease them back. The deal will generate $84 million for Bon-Ton.

  • Staples Canada progresses in Q1 sustainability

    Toronto - Staples Canada has released its 2015 recycling objectives and first quarter update. Highlights include a plan to collect three million ink cartridges and 4,000,000 kg of electronics in 2015.

    Staples Canada partners with Call2Recycle to collect and recycle batteries (rechargeable and alkaline) in every Staples store. In the first quarter, 37,111 kg of batteries were collected, an increase of 22.5% from the same quarter a year earlier. The retailer has set a goal of collecting 125,000 kg of batteries in 2015.
