  • Changing of the guard at luxury specialty retailer

    Barneys New York has promoted its COO to the top job.   Daniella Vitale has been named chief executive officer of the New York-based upscale specialty retailer.    Vitale replaces Mark Lee, who is retiring and will assume the role executive chairman. Lee joined Barneys as chief executive in 2010. He is credited with turning the business around. Lee previously served as CEO of Gucci, and also held positions at Yves Saint Laurent, Armani and Jill Sander. He started his career at Saks Fifth Avenue. 
  • Report: Amazon continues to influence shoppers’ online expectations

    Amazon continues to dictate the pace of online retailing, making it the “go-to” retailer for a majority of shoppers.   This is according to a report from PowerReviews, which surveyed more than 1,000 U.S. consumers aged 18 and over, about the features that make Amazon a leader, and the steps that brands and retailers can take to compete. Seventy-one percent of the shoppers said they make at least one Amazon purchase a month.   
  • Tractor Supply packs a double-digit wallop in Q4

    Tractor Supply Company shot up by the double-digits in the fourth quarter, with net sales jumping 16.4% over the year-ago quarter.   "While it was obviously a challenging retail environment, our Tractor Supply team managed the business well and drove strong comparable store sales and earnings per share growth," said CEO Greg Sandfort. "Throughout the quarter, the team worked hard to take advantage of weather trends, localize assortments, manage inventory and shorten the supply chain."  
  • InvenTrust buys adjoining centers in Pembroke Pines

    Acquisition-minded Inventrust Properties has announced the purchase of two adjoining centers in Pembroke Pines, Florida, for a total of $163 million. Following completion of an expansion project later this year, the two will total 389,000 sq. ft.   The dominant Westfork Plaza is anchored by Costco and Regal Cinemas and includes Ross Dress for Less, T.J. Maxx, and Petco. The adjoining Paraiso Parc is a Publix- anchored center with restaurants including Firehouse Subs and necessity-based retail.

    Land’s End’s growing commitment to environmentally focused business practices has earned it the Green Masters Award — for the seventh consecutive year.  
  • JLL names new West Coast leasing VP

    Kristin Grove, most recently director of leasing for GGP, has joined JLL as VP of National Retail Leasing. Grove will be based in Los Angeles and oversee leasing efforts and merchandising strategy for retail space on the West Coast.

    Eighty retail real estate executives from CBRE recently gained the distinction of being the first class to graduate from a course designed to give field professionals a deeper knowledge of rapidly evolving retail business models and how they influence site selection.  
  • Large-Format Experiential Stores Focus on the Customer Experience

    At a time when many retailers might be cutting back on brick-and-mortar investments to focus more on e-commerce, a few notable ones are taking the opposite approach and launching large-format experiential stores to immerse customers in the full brand experience and offer items in each product category, from couches to dresses.
