  • Gilt Groupe names president of home business

    NEW YORK — Gilt Groupe announced that it has named Jason Goldberger as general manager of Gilt Home. In this role, Goldberger will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the home business, including business strategy, merchandise and site development. Goldberger will report to Susan Lyne, chairman of Gilt Groupe.

  • NPD: Kids still got Bieber fever

    PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — Children's interest are constantly changing, but right now Justin Bieber is tops with kids. According to a May NPD Group survey, when asked what they thought the kids they know would identify as the hottest new thing these days, 10% of participants said Justin Bieber. 

    Though Bieber topped the list in May, he garnered a higher percentage (14%) when the survey was first conducted in February, indicating that interest in the pop singer could be waning. 

  • Starbucks expands mobile payment options

    Seattle -- Starbucks Corp. launched an application Wednesday that lets customers purchase goods with their Android smartphones. The company already has similar applications nationwide for BlackBerry and iPhone and iPod touch in January.

    The application also allows customers to load their Starbucks loyalty card accounts, check card balances and find stores nearby, and it notifies customers of promotions and other discounts.

  • Tuesday Morning lowers guidance after disappointing June start

    DALLAS — Tuesday Morning has revised its fiscal year guidance and now expects total net sales to be in the range of $820 million to $830 million and comparable-store sales to be slightly negative for the full year of fiscal 2011. Diluted earnings, based on these sales results, are now expected to be approximately 25 cents to 30 cents per share for fiscal 2011, the company.

  • Licensing Hall-of-Famer named consultant for Pacific Entertainment

    LAS VEGAS — Pacific Entertainment, creators of the Baby Genius brand of musical edu-tainment for infants and toddlers, announced that Alfred Kahn will join the company as an exclusive consultant in the children's preschool and education markets. 

  • Johnson’s departure leaves Apple without retail head

    New York City -- Ron Johnson’s decision to leave Apple, where he serves as senior VP of retail, to take the reins of J.C. Penney Co. leaves the tech giant without a retail chief as it begins to ramp up its international expansion.

    Apple plans to open 40 stores this fiscal year, with almost three-quarters of them outside the United States, the company announced in April. A big growth area is Asia.
    Apple has said very little with regards to its plans to replace Johnson.

  • Staples gets optimized for smartphones

    FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Staples announced that it has launched a mobile version of its website. The M.Staples.com mobile site is optimized for smartphones and features enhanced product ratings and reviews, one click to an ink and toner finder, a Staples retail store locator with automatic GPS, store inventory lookup and enhanced on-site search, including an auto-suggest feature, the company reported. 

    Staples' new mobile website also allows users to share product reviews and become a fan of Staples on Facebook, or follow Staples on Twitter.
