  • Another negative data point courtesy of Fred’s

    July same-store sales at Fred’s declined 0.5% and that’s not a particularly good sign for Walmart, as the company prepares to release its quarterly results on Aug. 16. Fred’s appeals to lower income shoppers at its 672 stores in the Southeastern U.S. where the company has considerable overlap with Walmart.

  • SpendingPulse: Specialty apparel and luxury up in July

    Purchase, N.Y. -- Apparel continued to show gains in July, while housing-related sectors such as electronics, appliances, and furniture remained sluggish, according to MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, a macroeconomic report tracking national retail and services sales. (The data estimates total U.S. retail sales across all payment forms including cash and check.)

    In other findings, auto parts and service posted its first decline after five months of growth.

  • Costco takes designer wedding gowns down South

    LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Costco announced that it is bringing its Kirstie Kelly wedding gowns to the South during limited-time trunk shows at select locations. 

  • Hhgregg swings to loss in Q1, on track to open 24 stores in second quarter

    Indianapolis -- Electronics and appliances retailer Hhgregg Inc. reported Thursday that it lost $761,000 in the quarter ended June 30, compared with a profit of $2.7 million in the year-ago period. The retailer cited softness in its video business for the weakened performance.

    Revenue dipped 1% to $431.5 million, from $436 million a year earlier. Wall Street expected revenue of $488 million. Same-store sales decreased 13.2%.

  • Sam's Club to offer free vision screenings

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam's Club is encouraging customers to protect their eyes by offering free vision screenings at its stores nationwide on Aug. 13.

    From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., both adults and children can receive a vision acuity screening, as well as a quick take-home test called an Amsler Grid, which tests for blurred or missing areas of vision.

  • Hhgregg sparks a Q1 loss

    INDIANAPOLIS — Specialty electronics retailer Hhgregg reported a net loss of $0.8 million for the first quarter ended June 30, or a loss of 2 cents per diluted share, compared with net income of $2.7 million, or 7 cents per diluted share, for the comparable prior-year period.

  • Costco, BJ’s and Target beat estimates in July

    New York City -- Warehouse club operators  Costco and BJ’s Wholesale Club continue to benefit from high fuel prices and bargain-seeking consumers, with both chain reporting solid results.

    Costco reported a 10% rise in same-store sales In July, beating Wall Street's expectations for an 8.6% increase.
