  • Michaels inks five-year deal with LogiSource

    IRVING, Texas  — Michaels Stores and procurement management firm announced on Friday a five-year agreement under which LogicSource will provide print procurement and related services to Michaels.

    More than $250 million of print and promotional spend will be covered over the life of the contract.

    Prior to beginning the relationship, LogicSource conducted a strategic analysis of Michaels’s print production ecosystem, from creative through to distribution, and developed a program designed for cost savings and operational enhancements.

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Senior leadership within Walmart’s merchandising organization continues to undergo a transformation, as the retailer’s chief merchandising officer Duncan Mac Naughton on Friday announced another round of personnel moves.

  • Starbucks CEO cancels speech at church

    New York City -- Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, cancelled a speech he was to give Friday at The Global Leadership Summit, an annual leadership summit organized by megachurch Willow Creek Community Church, South Barrington, Ill., after an online petition condemned the congregation as anti-gay. The church denies the charges.

    The annual event draws tens of thousands of viewers via satellite. Past speakers have included former GE's Jack Welch former president Bill Clinton.

  • Dillard's boasts EPS, comps growth in Q2

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Shortly after Nordstrom reported a 20% quarterly earnings gain, fellow luxury retailer Dillard's posted net income of $17.6 million, or 32 cents per share, compared with $6.8 million, or 10 cents per share, for the same period last year.

    Same-store sales for the second quarter were up 6%. Net sales for the quarter were $1.44 billion compared with $1.4 billion last year.

  • Economy no issue for Nordstrom

    SEATTLE — In another sign that the U.S. economy is affecting lower-income families more than those in higher earning brackets, luxury retailer Nordstrom reported a same-store sales increase of 7.3% for its second quarter and net sales of $2.72 billion, an increase of 12.4% compared with net sales of $2.42 billion for the same period last year.

  • Ingles Markets Q3 profit up 11%

    Asheville, N.C. -- Ingles Markets reported Friday that profit for the quarter ended June 25 rose 11% to $12.7 million, compared with $11.4 million in the year earlier period.

    Revenue increased 6% to $911 million from $856.1 million. Same-store sales, excluding fuel, rose 2%.

  • Retail sales in U.S. climb by highest percentage in four months

    Washington, D.C. -- A report released Friday by the Commerce Department said that retail sales in the U.S. rose 0.5% in July, the most in four months and demonstrating that consumers may be holding their own in a tumultuous economy.

    The 0.5% increase matched the Bloomberg News median forecast followed a 0.3% gain in June that was larger than estimated. Excluding auto sales, purchases rose more than projected.
