  • Tuesday Morning CEO files discrimination claim that breast cancer diagnosis figured in her ouster

    Dallas -- Kathleen Mason, former president and CEO of Tuesday Morning Corp., has filed disability discrimination charges against the retailer, alleging she was removed after disclosing to the board that she was battling breast cancer.

    "The board's attitude toward Kathleen changed after it learned of her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment,’ said attorney Roger Dunn, of Clouse Dunn Dunn LLP, Dallas, who is representing Mason, in a statement on Friday.

  • Shopko bolsters executive team

    GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko has named Craig Gourley as its new SVP, general merchandise manager home and hardlines.  

    In this position, Gourley will report to Jill Soltau, EVP, chief merchandising officer, and will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of merchandising for the home division including developing strategies, negotiation vendor partnerships and managing the buying team.

  • Kronos: Retail hiring slows for second consecutive month

    Chelmsford, Mass. -- The Kronos Retail Labor Index edged down one-tenth to 4.2% in July, reflecting declines in both hires and applications. (The index is defined as the ratio of hires to applications within a given month, expressed as a percentage. A level of 3.0 means that for every 100 applications received, three hires occurred.)

  • Starbucks stores in energy-saving pilot

    Oakland, Calif. -- Lucid, a provider of real-time feedback technology for buildings, is spearheading a study of resource consumption and behavior change with Starbucks Coffee Co. The pilot project, developed in conjunction with the Snohomish County Public Utility District and Portland Energy Conservation Inc., will be hosted by 10 Starbucks stores in Snohomish County, Ore., and will serve to test and document measurable energy savings in the stores.

    GLENDALE, Calif. — Paul Grimwood, CEO of Nestlé UK and Ireland, has been appointed to the role of chairman and CEO of Nestlé USA following the announcement by current chairman and CEO Brad Alford, who is to retire in October 2012.

  • Metro Group’s Real hypermarket chain deploys IBM couponing app

    Armonk, N.Y. -- Hypermarket chain Real, part of Metro Group, worked with IBM to launch a new electronic coupon system throughout its 320 German stores. This first-of-a-kind digital coupon system, developed with IBM Research scientists, enables consumers to use their mobile phones to find and redeem e-coupons as they shop in stores. It delivers a convenient and personalized service to shoppers, even if they left their paper coupons at home.

  • Mixed bag for retailers in July: Discounters shine, teen retailers disappoint

    NEW YORK — Many retailers reported better-than-expected results in July as warm weather and clearance sales drew shoppers into stores. Thomson Reuters reported that three-quarters of retailers reported results beat expectations. Costco Wholesale Corp., Target Corp., Limited Brands and Gap Inc. all reported gains above expectations.
