  • Football players, Dick's join to support breast cancer awareness

    PITTSBURGH — Dick's Sporting Goods is partnering with a group of current professional football players who have had life experiences with breast cancer, as part of its campaign for National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Denver linebacker Von Miller, New England wide receiver Wes Welker and other gridiron stars will promote the "Sport Your Support" campaign and "Endless Ribbon" initiative via public relations and social media.

  • Tesco first half profit drops on high turnaround costs

    London -- British retailer Tesco reported Wednesday that profit dropped 6.8% in its first fiscal half to $2.06 billion, weighed down by costs associated with its turnaround strategy.

    Revenue for the period inched up 1.6% to $51.9 billion, but costs were up as well for the world’s third-largest retailer. Same-store sales fell off 0.7%.

    "The plan is a long course of treatment for us, not a single dose," new CEO Philip Clarke said of the turnaround plan.

  • Uniqlo to open first West Coast flagship in San Francisco

    SAN FRANCISCO — Fast Retailing will open its first West Coast Uniqlo flagship store in the Union Square neighborhood of San Francisco.

  • 3M realigns business structure

    3M has announced a realignment of its major business groups to better serve global markets and customers, effective immediately.

    The new structure will be comprised of five business groups: Consumer (2011 sales of $4.2 billion), Industrial ($9.6 billion), Health Care ($5.0 billion) and two newly formed business groups: Safety & Graphics ($5.5 billion), and Electronics & Energy ($5.7 billion). Previously, the company operated six segments.

  • Walmart launches prepaid card reload program

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores said Tuesday that it is launching a new service called Rapid Reload, which allows customers to load money onto prepaid cards.

    The service is affiliated with Green Dot Network, InComm's Vanilla Reload Network and First Data's Money Network.

    For a fee of $3.74, the program allows customers, effective immediately, to add money to their card at a store register.

  • Survey: CFOs predict 5.9% increase in 2012 online sales

    Chicago -- Survey results released Tuesday by BDO USA revealed that 51% of retail finance chiefs foresee a 5.9% increase in online sales for full-year 2012.

    That compares to 4.1% and 4.5% expected increases in same-store sales and total sales, respectively.

    The BDO Retail Compass Survey of CFOs, which examined the opinions of 100 CFOs at leading retailers located throughout the country, found that CFO sentiments were conservative compared to last year, when the respondents predicted 11.9% online sales growth.

  • NRF: Holiday 2012 sales forecast to rise 4.1%, down from last year’s growth

    Washington, D.C. -- The National Retail Federation released its 2012 holiday forecast on Tuesday, which shows sales increasing 4.1% to $586.1 billion, down from last year’s 5.6% growth.

    However, the NRF’s 2012 estimate tops the 10-year holiday sales growth average of 3.5%.

  • Marketing consulting firm names EVP

    WESTPORT, Conn. — Etailing Solutions, an integrated online sales and marketing consultancy, has named Brian Cohen as EVP, general manager.

    Cohen most recently led the Digital Shopper Marketing practice at CatapultRPM. Part of the Hyper Marketing Inc. network, Etailing Solutions provides consumer goods companies with data services/insights, strategy development, sales support and visual merchandising.
