  • Survey: Six-in-10 consumers oppose Thanksgiving shopping

    Foster City, Calif. – Although many retailers will be open for business Thanksgiving, they may wind up angering more consumers than they please. According to a new survey conducted by Prosper Insights for Visa, 62% of more than 4,600 adult U.S. consumers said they would not shop on and are opposed to shopping on Thanksgiving.

  • One-in-four Black Friday shoppers plan Thanksgiving start

    Los Angeles -- Black Friday shoppers are looking to extend the Black Friday experience as much as possible. According to new survey results from PriceGrabber, 24% of Black Friday shoppers plan to start shopping on the evening of Thanksgiving. When asked if they plan to take advantage of extended hours during the weekend, 57% said they plan to do so.

  • S&P 500 drops J.C. Penney

    Plano, Texas – J.C. Penney will no longer be included on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.  

    Dow Jones Indices, which manages the S&P 500 as well as many other financial indices, said on Nov. 22 that Allegion, an Ireland-based provider of mechanical and electronic security products, will replace Penney on the S&P 500. Penney will join the S&P MidCap 400. The change will become effective after the stock market closes on Nov. 29.

  • Cyber Monday popular among working consumers

    Nearly nine-in-10 (86%) working consumers plan to spend at least some time shopping or browsing online for gifts during work hours this Cyber Monday. A new RetailMeNot retail trends report also shows that 25% of working Americans plan to actually spend four hours or more shopping online for gifts during work hours that day.

  • Stater Bros. Markets in executive promotion

    San Bernardino, Calif. -- Stater Bros. Markets has announced the promotion of David Harris to the position of executive VP finance, CFO and principal accounting officer of Stater Bros. Markets, effective Nov. 25.
     
    Harris joined Stater Bros. in 2009 as VP finance. In June 2011 he was promoted to senior VP finance, and in 2012 he was promoted to senior VP finance, CFO and principal accounting officer.

    Harris reports to Jack H. Brown, chairman of the board and CEO.

  • Staples launches online ink & toner recycling program

    Staples has launched an online ink and toner recycling program. The online program is an expansion of the existing, in-store Staples Rewards ink and toner recycling program.

    The online program enables Staples Rewards members to recycle empty ink and toner cartridges by printing a pre-paid shipping label to send their cartridges in for recycling and receive $2 back in Staples Rewards for each one

  • Retail Store of the Year Design Competition early bird rate ends on Nov. 29

    New York — The early bird rate for Chain Store Age's 32nd annual Retail Store of the Year design competition ends on Nov. 29. Retailers, design firms, architects and suppliers are invited to submit entries for the competition, whose regular deadline for submission is December 23, 2013.

  • Report: MakerBot opens Boston store

    Brooklyn, N.Y. – 3-D printer manufacturer MakerBot has reportedly opened its first Boston retail store, and third store overall. According to the Boston Globe, MakerBot opened the store, located on Newbury Street, Nov. 21.
