  • Report: Toys ‘R’ Us prices 37% higher than Amazon

    Ottawa, Ontario – Toys ‘R’ Us, which carries about 425 of the same video games as Amazon.com, is on average 37% higher priced than Amazon as of Nov 21. The latest Amazon Holiday Pricing Insights report from pricing solutions provider 360pi also found that the toy retailer has been keeping prices high during the last month and even increasing them during the week of Nov. 21, which may point to a deep discount strategy the week of Nov. 28.

    Some other findings include:

  • Jos. A. Bank offers ‘Super Tuesday’ holiday promotion

    Hampstead, Md. – Jos. A. Bank is attempting to get a jump on the many retailers starting their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving by offering a “Super Tuesday” sale event on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The retailer will offer Black Friday prices on select “doorbuster” items in its 571 company-owned full-line stores nationwide.

    In addition, these select doorbuster items will be offered online at Josbank.com beginning at 12:01 a.m. (EST) on November 26, 2013, and there will be other special one-day price discounts.

  • Ann Inc. looks ‘outstanding’ in third quarter

    Higher sales, including mid-single digit comparable -sales growth, helped drive Ann Inc.’s third quarter results.  

    The company posted third-quarter earnings of $41.2 million, compared to $40.7 million in the year-earlier quarter. Net sales grew 7% to $657.3 million from $612.5 million. Total same-store sales increased 3.7%. By brand, same-store sales inched up 0.6% at Ann Taylor and 5.6% at Loft. However, sales fell 6.9% in the Ann Taylor Factory channel.

  • Forest City survey: Holiday shoppers looking for value

    Cleveland -- Holiday spending expectations are in line with last year when in-store shopping accounted for 70% of spending, according to a new survey by Forest City Enterprises. The average in-store expenditure is expected to increase by 1% to about $774. The average online expenditure is expected to decrease by 0.3% to $330.

    Holiday shoppers will be driven more than ever by value this year and that they expect to shift even more of their spending toward children, the study found.  

  • Thanksgiving sales have low social media promotion

    Raleigh, N.C. – Thanksgiving holiday sales are not getting much social promotion this year from retailers. According to an analysis of 494 brand posts from eight retailers by social software company Expion, only 10 focused on Thanksgiving holiday sales (Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday), or just 2% of all brand posts, and only five of the eight retailers posted about holiday sales.

  • Foot Locker net income flags in Q3, but still beats Street

    New York – Foot Locker’s net income fell 2% in the third quarter, dropping to $104 million from $106 million.

    Total revenue grew 6.4% to $1.62 million from $1.52 million, above estimates. Same-store sales increased 4.1%.

    Cost of sales and income tax expense both increased during the quarter, affecting net income. During the third quarter, the company opened 28 new stores, remodeled or relocated 118 stores, and closed 13 stores.

  • Wal-Mart starts Cyber Monday early

    San Bruno, Calif. – Wal-Mart is providing a number of special holiday deals to online and mobile shoppers as part of an early Cyber Monday promotion that begins Saturday, Nov. 30. In addition, Walmart's mobile app customers, Facebook fans and email subscribers will be among the first to receive invitations to an early shopping event on Sunday, Dec. 1, featuring up to 20 of the best Cyber Monday items while supplies last, before they are widely available.

  • Cyber Monday ‘site-crashers’ revealed

    In keeping with the new holiday tradition of revealing promotions early, Walmart on Friday shared its range of extreme value items and free shipping offers and pushed the start of Cyber Monday to Saturday, November 30.

    The headliner deal is a LG brand 55 inch, 3D LED television with a sound bar for $799 along with 200 other online specials that will last through Friday, December 6. Walmart also reduced its free shipping threshold to $35 from $50.
