  • Execs with Amazon and Nike experience join Razorfish

    Digital design and marketing consultancy Razorfish made two key hires to bolster the capabilities of its rapidly growing commerce practice led by Commerce Strategy head Jason Goldberg.

    Jon Reily and Steve White were named vice presidents of commerce strategy and both will report to Goldberg. The hire are said to help the agency meet the increasing demand from clients looking for partners able to combine commerce strategy with world-class delivery to reinvent and digitize their retail channels.

  • Wal-Mart not worried about competitors; its 2 million associates are the key

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Speaking at Wal-Mart Stores’ annual shareholders meeting in Bentonville, Arkansas, president and CEO Doug McMillon told the more than 14,000 assembled associates and shareholders that he is more worried about the enemy within the company than competitors.

    “The truth is the real villains are lurking within the company,” said McMillon. “Our real villains are things like bureaucracy, complacency, a lack of speed, or a lack of passion.”

    Franklin, Tenn. - The new EMV card payment mandate may not provide financial ROI for retailers. According to new research from IHL Group, most retailers will never recoup the expense that EMV imposes.

  • Report: Best Buy CEO still believes in brick-and-mortar

    The CEO of Best Buy says brick-and-mortar stores are absolutely vital to beating Amazon.com and other retail rivals.

    According to MPR News, Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly told students at the University of Minnesota that "the chain's roughly 1,400 U.S. stores allow the retailer to demonstrate new products for customers and deliver the goods faster than Internet-only merchants."

  • Five Below profit rises in Q1; plans 155 new stores

    Philadelphia – Five Below Inc. reported healthy profit and sales gains in the first quarter of fiscal 2015 and is planning to open 155 stores in the next two fiscal years. The retailer’s net income totaled $4.28 million, up 39% from $3.08 million a year earlier.

    Higher gross profit and the elimination of debt extinguishment loss helped Five Below reach above in net income. Five Below plans to open 70 stores and enter six new states in 2015, and plans 85 openings for 2016.

  • Mother's Day a boon for L Brands

    The Mother's Day holiday drove up traffic at L Brands, which reported a surge in same store sales for May.

    The company reported that net sales increased 5% to $799.1 million for the four weeks ended May 30, compared to net sales of $763.6 million for the four weeks ended May 31, 2014. Same store sales for the four weeks ended May 30, increased 5%.

  • GS1 honors apparel and merchandise retailers

    Lawrenceville, N.J. - GS1 US has recognized three companies with GS1 US Apparel and General Merchandise Retail Industry Achievement Awards. The awards, which honor organizations that have implemented GS1 standards to deliver outstanding achievements in innovating the retail supply chain, were presented to the following winning companies in three categories:

    • GS1 US Retailer Excellence Award: Macy’s Inc.
    • GS1 US Supplier Excellence Award: PVH Corp.
    • GS1 US Solution Provider Excellence Award: OpenText|GXS

  • Pharmacy still driving sales at Rite Aid

    Same store sales increased 2.1% at Rite Aid in May thanks in large part to growth in the retailer's pharmacy division.
