  • Central New Jersey retail vacancy rate rises to 9.8%

    Old Bridge, N.J. — The retail vacancy rate along central New Jersey’s major shopping corridors increased to 9.8% this summer, according to R.J. Brunelli & Co.’s 24th annual study of the central New Jersey market.

    The disappointing upward spike follows a major decline from a 10-year high of 10.5% to 9.1% between 2011 and 2012. R.J. Brunelli attributed the change to growing closures of smaller ships overcoming progress in re-tenanting big-box spaces larger than 20,000 sq. ft.

  • Pearle Vision to unveil new store design

    Mason, Ohio -- Pearle Vision will unveil its new store design on Sept. 17 in Legacy Village, Lyndhurst, Ohio. The new Cleveland-area location features a completely remodeled design, which includes everything from a new brand logo and signage to modernized displays and a completely transformed floor plan. The store design is by WD Partners, Columbus, Ohio.

  • RILA names former GM exec as public affairs VP

    Arlington, Va. –The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) has named Annette Guarisco as executive VP for public affairs, effective Oct. 1. Guarisco will oversee RILA’s federal and state government affairs, as well as the association’s communications efforts.

    Guarisco joins RILA following more than 11 years as a senior executive at General Motors, most recently serving as executive director of global public policy.

  • Why Target loves showrooming

    Pundits and the media have cast showrooming at various times as either a scourge to brick-and-mortar retailers or as a death knell — another proverbial nail in the coffin.

    There’s no question that showrooming, where shoppers browse products in a store and then purchase online, is a threat to retailers like Target that have a significant investment in real estate and physical stores.

    However, less publicized is the fact that showrooming is also the greatest opportunity for retailers.

  • Report: Suit accuses Home Depot of unjust shoplifting fines

    Atlanta – The Home Depot, Inc. is reportedly being sued in California Superior Court for unfair, arbitrary attempts to collect damages from customers accused of shoplifting.

    According to Bloomberg, a California man filed a class action suit against Home Depot on Sept. 5 after receiving two letters from the retailer’s law firm threatening criminal prosecution if he did not pay hundreds of dollars in damages for taking work gloves worth about $8, which he says he did not steal.

  • Family Dollar taps new EVP of supply chain

    MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores has named Jeffrey W. Macak as the company’s EVP of supply chain. Macak will report to president and COO Mike Bloom.

  • No alternate suitors appear for Saks

    New York -- The planned merger between Saks Inc. and Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) took another step forward with the expiration of the 40-day “go shop” period for Saks on Sept. 6. As previously disclosed, the merger agreement entered into on July 28, 2013 between Saks and HBC contained a 40-day “go-shop” period during which Saks was permitted to solicit alternative proposals from third parties.

  • Tesco's to sell Fresh & Easy

    EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Private investment firm Yucaipa Cos., which was founded by billionaire Ron Burkle, plans to acquire Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market from U.K.-based Tesco PLC.

    Yucaipa's purchase is slated to be complete within three months. In the meantime, it is expected to be business as usual for most Fresh & Easy stores.
