  • A&P store sell-off begins

    Quincy, Mass. – The sell-off of stores from the newly bankrupt Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. (A&P) has begun. The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC has entered into an agreement with A&P to acquire 25 A&P stores in greater New York for $146 million.

  • Rite Aid brings health to Ohio

    Camp Hill, Pa. - Rite Aid is trying to ensure its Ohio customers stay as healthy as possible. The drugstore chain is partnering with HealthSpot, a healthcare technology provider, to open HealthSpot stations inside 25 Rite Aid pharmacies in Ohio.

  • Barnes & Noble names Toys ‘R’ Us exec as digital, Nook chief

    New York – Barnes & Noble Inc. is not playing around when it comes to digital retail or its Nook e-reader. The retailer has named Frederic D. Argir as VP and chief digital officer overseeing the e-commerce and Nook businesses, which are part of the retail division.

    Argir joins Barnes & Noble from Toys ‘R Us Inc., where he also served as chief digital officer. Barnes & Noble also said that Mahesh Veerina, president of the Nook consumer business, will leave the company on Feb. 1, 2016.

  • Taylor Swift picks Chinese e-commerce partner – it’s not Alibaba

    Beijing – Pop star Taylor Swift has selected a Chinese e-commerce partner – and it isn’t Alibaba. Chinese e-commerce platform JD.com will be the first authorized seller of Taylor Swift merchandise in China.

    The new JD.com store will be the official online source of Taylor Swift items, including a new fashion line the music superstar designed specifically for the Chinese market.

  • Major grocery chain files chapter 11; sells stores for $600 million

    Montvale, N.J. – The rumors are true. As expected, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company Inc. (A&P) has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

    In a brief statement on its website, privately held A&P says it has secured financing of $100 million and voluntarily filed for chapter. A&P has also entered agreements to sell 120 stores for $600 million and will close more of its 296 stores in the near future.

    New York – Macy’s Inc. is attempting to make charitable donations fashionable. The retailer’s new Fashion Pass program provides customers 15%-20% off storewide, plus $10 off a $30 purchase, when they give $5 at the register from July 22 to Aug. 15.
