  • Party City taps former Ahold exec as new finance head

    Party City Holdco Inc. on Thursday named Daniel J. Sullivan as CFO.   Sullivan succeeds Michael A. Correale, who is stepping down as Party City CFO to focus on the newly created position of executive VP chief accounting officer and treasurer, effective Aug. 29. In his new role, Correale will be responsible for all of the company’s external financial reporting, treasury functions, banking and credit relationships.  
  • Specialty jeweler steps up store expansion

    Alex and Ani is ramping up its store growth.   The Cranston, Rhode Island-based retailer plans to open 27 new locations in North America by the end of 2016, giving it a total of some 90 stores.     With the majority of its stores located on the East Coast, Alex and Ani, which is privately held, is now looking further afield. It will make its Southern California debut this fall, in Orange County.    
  • Starbucks takes express store concept over the pond

    Starbucks Corp.’s “express” store format made its international debut, in London.   Designed for people on-the-go, the store has a welcoming environment with the barista and customer at its heart. Design features include textures of complementary natural wood and marble. It offers a streamlined menu with items displayed on digital menu boards that rotate throughout the day. The open layout allows for an early order point, which allows customers to order, pay and pick-up even faster.  
  • Macy’s tests in-store artificial intelligence tool

    It won’t help you find Pikachu, but a new mobile tool from Macy’s will assist shoppers in navigating the store.   The department store retailer is piloting “Macy’s On Call,” a solution that lets in-store customers use their mobile phones to interact with an artificial intelligence (AI) platform powered by IBM Watson. The Satisfi intelligent engagement platform provides the connection between the mobile tool and the Watson platform.

    Sequels are rarely better than the original, but the second annual Amazon Prime Day may deserve comparisons to “The Godfather Part II” and “The Empire Strikes Back.”  
  • Study: Book retailer shows brand strength

    A familiar chain has been named the most powerful retail brand of 2016.   According to the 2016 Top 100 Most Powerful Brands report from brand marketing firm Tenet Partners, Barnes & Nobile is the most powerful retail brand, and 32nd most powerful brand overall, of the year. This is the second straight year Barnes & Noble ranked highest among retailers.  
  • Target hires Apple veteran to oversee global logistics

    A veteran of Apple has been named as the new senior VP in charge of global logistics, inventory allocation and replenishment at Target.   Ben Cook will lead the optimization of Target’s inbound and outbound supply chain processes, including carrier transportation and last-mile delivery. He’ll also oversee inventory allocation and replenishment, merchandise planning operations and global logistics. He will report to Target’s executive vice president and chief supply chain and logistics officer, Arthur Valdez.
  • Analysis: Unilever acquires online retail startup Dollar Shave Club

    The Unilever-Dollar Shave Club deal reflects the growing importance of emerging brands, vertical integration, and the consumer direct route to market favored by new CPG market entrants such as Dollar Shave Club, Honest Co., and NatureBox.
