    Investing in energy conservation makes business sense: According to ASHRAE, energy is the second highest retailer operating expense. A new white paper by the Retail Leaders Industry Association (RILA) and Schneider Electric notes that recent weather extremes have increased energy costs for retailers, and the trend is expected to continue. Factor in potential electricity price increases in the near future, and increases in energy costs could be significant.

  • Report: Groupon purchases Canadian couponing app

    Chicago – Groupon has reportedly purchased Canadian coupon app SnapSaves. According to the Canadian Press, Groupon completed the purchase June 13, buying the app for an undisclosed sum from Toronto-based daily deals site Buytopia.

    SnapSaves users can take smartphone photos of their grocery receipts and receive refunds on select products. Groupon has been expanding its smartphone offerings in the past year, including the launch of a mobile app version of its website and a smartphone digital coupon feature called Freebies.

  • Sam’s Club opens new Kansas City store June 26

    Bentonville Ark. - Sam’s Club will open a new Kansas City, Missouri store on June 26. Measuring approximately 136,000-sq.-ft., the new store will feature a variety of members-only amenities, including a fresh bakery, a tire and battery center, a café and a fuel station.

    To staff the new Kansas City store, Sam’s Club has hired more than 180 new associates.
     

  • Walmart Canada names Delhaize Group exec as president, CEO

    Mississauga, Ontario -- Walmart Canada has appointed an executive from Delhaize Group, Dirk Van den Berghe, as president and CEO, effective Aug. 1.

    Van den Berghe, who has 30 years of international business experience, most recently served as CEO of Delhaize’s Belgium and Luxembourg operations. His appointment at Walmart was seen as a way for the discounter to strengthen its grocery business in Canada.

  • Survey: Online grocery experience needs improvement

    London – Three-quarters of online shoppers have shopped online for groceries and 40% of these do so on a regular basis, but only one-third of grocery shoppers rate their experience as “easy.” And only one-in-five (19%) of those surveyed by EDigitalResearch are delighted with their online grocery experience.

  • Cullinan promotes Brill to VP, director of leasing

    Peoria, Ill. — Cullinan Properties has promoted Kathleen Cullinan Brill to VP, director of leasing. In her new role, Brill will direct the leasing, sales and marketing functions of Cullinan Properties while managing third party broker relationships.

    Since joining Cullinan in 2006, Brill has completed over 1,000,000 sq. ft. of transactions, including big-box and junior anchor retailers such as Target, Costco, Gordmans and Hy-Vee as well as numerous national and regional small shop tenants and restaurants.

  • Regency plans redevelopment for Kings Park

    Washington, D.C. — Regency Centers plans to redevelop Kings Park Shopping Center in the Northern Virginia town of Burke. The work will include a facelift, enhanced common areas and structural expansion.
