  • Safeway Ok’s $1 billion stock buyback program

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Safeway Inc. said Monday it approved a $1 billion stock buyback program.

    The operator of grocery chains such as Safeway, Vons and Dominick's had about $400 million remaining under its stock repurchase program, through Feb. 22. The buyback authorization does not have an expiry date.

  • Alliance Data in new multi-agreement with Canada’s Toys"R"Us

    DALLAS — Alliance Data Systems Corp. announced that its Canadian coalition loyalty business has signed a new multi-year agreement with Toys“R”Us, Canada to issue air miles reward miles in its 73 stores across Canada effective March 23.

    The Air Miles Reward Program is Canada’s premier coalition loyalty program, with approximately two-thirds of Canadian households actively collecting reward miles.

  • Long-time Kroger exec to head Delta division

    CINCINNATI — Long-time Kroger executive Tim Brown will now be responsible for stores in Western Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri as president of the company's Delta division.

    Brown, 52, has been VP operations in the company's division, based in Roanoke, Va., since 2011; before that he served as the Mid-Atlantic division's vice president of merchandising since 2009.

  • Starbucks opens its first Evolution Fresh juice bar

    Seattle -- Starbucks Corp. opened its first-ever juice bar under its newest banner, Evolution Fresh. The shop, which also features wraps, soups, salads and vegetarian items, is located in Bellevue, Wash.

    Starbucks purchased the Evolution Fresh juice brand in November for $30 million. The coffee giant plans to roll out Evolution Fresh juices to its coffee shops later this year.

  • PriceSmart to open third location in Columbia

    San Diego -- PriceSmart announced that it has purchased land on which it will build a PriceSmart Warehouse Club in North Cali, Colombia. It would be the company’s third store in Colombia.

    PriceSmart recently began construction of a location in South Cali, that is expected to open in October 2012. It anticipates the North Cali PriceSmart Club will open in the spring of 2013.
     

  • Panera Bread Co. announces move to co-CEOs

    St. Louis -- Panera Bread Co. announced that founder and executive chairman, Ron Shaich, and president and CEO, Bill Moreton, will become co-CEOs, effective immediately.

    The announcement formalizes a relationship that has evolved over the last year and is a reflection of the way in which Shaich and Moreton have been operating as partners, the company said.

    Each individual's formal title will be as follows: Ron Shaich, chairman of the board and co-CEO; Bill Moreton, president and co-CEO.

  • Kroger names sustainability chief

    New York -- The Kroger Co. appointed Suzanne Lindsay as its first director of sustainability. Prior to Kroger, Lindsay led sustainability initiatives at PetSmart.

    “We have made substantial progress in sustainability in the past five years through energy savings, waste reduction, transportation efficiency and by reducing the use of plastic bags,” said Lynn Marmer, group VP, corporate affairs at Kroger. “Suzanne will help us accelerate our progress and identify new opportunities to improve our environmental stewardship.”
