  • Ingles Markets' new store receives Energy Star certification

    Asheville, N.C. -- Ingles Markets’ new store in Mills River, N.C., has received an Energy Star certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that recognizes the energy efficiency of the store’s design. The store was awarded the certification after meeting strict EPA guidelines for the estimated energy use of the building.

    Menzer resigned as CEO of Michaels following a stroke he suffered back in April, while Herkert was let go from his CEO role at Supervalu following a string of poor results.

  • Calla Lily Salon opens at Plymouth Meeting Mall

    Plymouth Meeting, Pa. -- Philadelphia-based Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust said that Calla Lily Salon recently opened a 1,529-sq.-ft. hair salon at Plymouth Meeting (Pa.) Mall.

    Charming Charlie opened at the mall in July.

  • Earnings, private stock price take a hit at Publix

    LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix sales grew $6.8 billion in the second quarter, a 3.2% increase from $6.6 billion for the same period last year. Same-store sales rose 1.9%.

    Net earnings took a slight hit, declining 0.2%, to $381.6 million from $382.4 million in 2011. However, earnings per share for the second quarter increased to 49 cents for 2012, up from 48 cents per share in 2011.

  • Costco’s same-store sales up 5% in July

    Issaquah, Wash. -- Costco Wholesale Corp. posted a 5% increase in same-store sales in July, helped by strong sales at its U.S. stores. But the stronger dollar and lower gas prices pressured its results.

    Same-store revenue at U.S. locations open was up 7% for the period ended July 29. The figure was flat for its international stores.

    Taking out the impact of lower gas prices and a stronger dollar, same-store sales rose 7% for the month. In the U.S., the metric was up 8% while overseas it rose 7%.

  • Weis Markets net income up 12.7%

    SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets reported that it's net income increased 12.7% to $23.2 million in net income while its earnings per share increased 11.7% to 86 cents per share, compared with 77 cents per share for the same period in 2011. Second quarter operating income increased 11.4% to $35.3 million.

    Second quarter sales increased 0.1% to $677.1 million while comparable-store sales increased 0.4%.

  • Weis Markets profit rises in Q2; sales flat

    Sunbury, Pa. -- Weis Markets reported Tuesday that net income for the quarter ended June 30 rose 12.1% to $23.2 million, compared with $20.7 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales were essentially flat at $677.1 million, and same-store sales inched up 0.4%.

    President and CEO David Hepfinger cited a “stagnant sales environment” for the near-flat sales but said the grocer continues to improve efficiencies and store-level productivity.
     

  • Natural Grocers makes Arizona debut with Flagstaff opening

    Denver -- National Grocers by Vitamin Cottage said Tuesday that its first Arizona store – in Flagstaff – has opened, and will be joined by two additional stores located in Sedona and Prescott.

    The privately owned regional grocery chain, which operates 56 stores in 12 states, incorporated environmentally friendly elements into the Flagstaff store. Energy-efficient features include motion light sensors, 100% post-consumer content tiles, polished concrete flooring and commercial-grade LED lights.  And the chain is 100% shopping bag free.
