  • Delhaize Group Q4 sales beat estimates

    An extra week of sales and accelerating food inflation helped Delhaize Group, the owner of Food Lion stores, post profits that beat analyst estimates.

    The company reported that fourth quarter U.S. revenues were $5.23 billion, a 12% increase from $4.67 billion the same period a year earlier. Same-store sales rose 3.6% in the U.S., but fell 6.9% in Belgium and 2.2% in Southeastern Europe.

  • FTC okays Safeway-Albertsons merger

    The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has cleared the merger of supermarket operators Safeway Inc. and Albertsons, creating a larger competitor to rival chain Kroger. But there is one caveat.

    The FTC agreed to the deal only after Safeway and Albertsons agreed to sell 168 stores to address the FTC’s competition concerns.

  • U.S. performance buoys Delhaize revenue in Q4

    Brussels, Belgium – The addition of a 53rd week in fiscal 2014 for its U.S. operations helped global grocery conglomerate Delhaize Group make up for disappointing results from its Belgium stores. Including the extra week and benefiting from retail inflation, fourth quarter U.S. revenues were $5.23 billion, a 12% increase from $4.67 billion the same period a year earlier.

  • Bi-Lo taps veteran Australian retailer as CEO

    New York -- Bi-Lo Holdings, parent company of Bi-Lo, Harveys and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, has appointed veteran Australian retail executive Ian McLeod as president and CEO, effective March 2. He succeeds Randall Onstead, who will remain in place through March 2.

  • Report: Kroger buys Macy’s shopping center site in Ohio for $10.5 million

    Cincinnati – Kroger Co. has reportedly purchased a soon-to-be shuttered Macy’s store located in the Kingsdale shopping center in Upper Arlington, Ohio, for $10.5 million. According to Columbus Business First, Kroger may include multifamily housing or offices in its redevelopment plans for the site.

    The Zoning Board would have to approve any Kroger redevelopment plans. Giant Eagle also operates a grocery store in the Kingsdale center. Kroger did not comment.
     

  • Bi-Lo names veteran Australian exec as CEO

    Bi-Lo Holdings has turned to a veteran Australian retail executive to take over as president and CEO.

    The parent company of Bi-Lo, Harveys and Winn-Dixie grocery stores said that Ian McLeod has been appointed president and CEO effective March 2. McLeod succeeds Randall Onstead, who will remain in place through March 2.

  • Fry’s and Ralphs execs join grocery group’s board

    Vice presidents of merchandising at Fry’s Food Stores and Ralph’s and two other executives are the newest members of the board of the Western Association of Food Chains.

    The trade group said four new members were elected to its board at its annual meeting this month in LaQuinta, Ca. Joining the board are Monica Garnes, Vice President of Merchandising at Fry’s, Dennis Gibson, president of QFC Stores, Valerie Jabbar, Vice President of Merchandising at Ralphs and Rob McDougall, President and CEO of Gelson’s.

  • Wal-Mart Canada opening 11 supercenters in January

    Mississauga, Canada – Wal-Mart Canada will open 11 supercenters across the country by Jan. 29, 2015, completing its expansion for the company's current fiscal year. Walmart Canada's total store count will be 394 stores, including 280 supercenters and 114 discount stores.

  • Report: Whole Foods Market to open six new stores in Chicago

    New York -- Whole Foods Market plans to open six new locations in Chicago, four of which will open in May, according to Crain’s Chicago Business.

    The new stores will be located in former Dominick’s locations.

    “We took the time to design and build a brand new store for each community that would offer not just a full-service grocery, but also a place to meet friends and share each other’s company,” said Michael Bashaw, president of Whole Foods Market’s Midwest Region, in a statement.
