  • Petco launches product for pets and pet owners

    SAN DIEGO — Petco is showing customers that it takes the “Happier People” part of its motto seriously with its latest exclusive product offering from Kusin & Kusin Ltd.: Reviver Pets Freshening Swipes, the first-ever reusable, dry-application freshening swipe for use on pets and their humans.

  • Oreck brand lives on with Hong Kong owner

    More of a mass market future could be in the cards for the Oreck Corporation following acquisition of its assets this week by TTI Group’s Royal Appliance subsidiary, which manufactures well known home improvement and housewares brands.

    Oreck filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year and this week the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Tennessee approved the sale of its assets to Royal Appliance for a little more than $17 million and the assumption of certain debt obligations.

  • Meijer is ready for back to school

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer conducted a survey of its customers, which revealed that 90% of them plan to spend the same or more than they did last year and 40% will have completed their back-to-school shopping before the school year begins. 

    Median spend will range between $101-$150 per student and $201-$250 in total. In addition, 15% of parents expect students to help pay for a portion of school expenses and nearly 30% will get help from grandparents.

  • Big Lots searches for new head merchant

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — Big Lots EVP and CMO John C. Martin has announced his plans to retire. He will remain with the company until his successor is appointed, and has committed to provide guidance to his successor and the company through May 2014.  

    Big Lots has retained SpencerStuart to conduct a search of external potential candidates.

  • Enabler of e-commerce adds technology VP

    DropShip Commerce, a provider of distributed supply chain management solutions to mid-market retailers, appointed of Scott Lemon as VP of technology.

    Lemon will oversee the firm’s software as a service-based, on-demand platform to help retailers and manufacturers use the virtual supply chain to be more responsive to consumer demand in the age of e-commerce.

  • Furniture groups take their show on the e-commerce road

    Furniture chains of North America have united — in the digital space, that is — in the form of a re-launch of Furniture.com.

    Described as a “unique online shopping experience powered by the merchandising and service capabilities of top brick-and-mortar furniture chains,” the partnership includes RoomsToGo, Schottenstein Stores and Leon’s Furniture of Canada.

    The retailers will provide sourcing, warehousing and delivery capabilities for the e-commerce site, planned to be re-launched later this year.

    Total U.S. Shopper Traffic in Retail Stores and Malls for June 2013

    Shopper activity slightly decreased last month, thus returning to seasonal standards after May holidays. Retail foot traffic decreased 1.3% in June compared to May 2013, a slight departure from recently reported positive month-over-month retail trends. However, foot traffic for June 2013 was relatively flat compared to the same month in 2012 — with an increase of 0.3%.
