Dick's to open Field & Stream concept in August

7/17/2013

Dick's Sporting Goods plans to open its first Field & Stream branded store this August in Cranberry Township, Pa., as part of the company's ongoing strategy to drive growth with speciality store concepts. The company also recently opened its first True Runner speciality store in its hometown of Pittsburgh.

Dick's acquired rights to operate retail stores under the 140 year old Field & Stream brand in late 2012. When the company reported fourth quarter results earlier this year indicated it would open two Field & Stream stores focused on outdoor categories and two True Runner locations in 2013. Dick's already operates a large number of stand alone golf stores under the Golf Galaxy banner.

"We look forward to providing great brands, products and customer service to all outdoor enthusiasts," said Jack Barnes, general merchandise manager for Field & Stream.

The company added that Field & Stream is being created for a passionate outdoors audience and will employ people who are themselves enthusiasts, who can share their personal expertise and experiences. Accordingly, the grand opening will feature a 4,000 gallon bass tank and a Field & Stream branded archery trailer.

The outdoor space is fairly crowded. Dick's already operates more than 500 full line stores which offer a broad assortment of hunting, fishing, camping and other outdoor related products. It also competes with specialists such as Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops which have developed smaller footprint stores to enable increased growth opportunities and Gander Mountain which has begun to growth more aggressively.

The new Field & Stream store will be located at 1000 Cranberry Square Drive and the grand opening is slated for Friday, August 16, although it is conveivable the company will soft open the store.

The Field & Stream trademark is owned by American Sports Licensing Inc., and is not associated with Field & Stream Licenses Company or Field & Stream Magazine, according to Dick's.
