  • Executive departures don’t diminish growth potential in China

    The resignation of two top executives at Walmart China earlier this week initially seemed a rather stunning development given China’s importance to Walmart’s future and the fact that the company just held an analysts meeting in Shenzhen in late March. However, Walmart is now looking to capitalize on compelling growth prospects in the world’s second largest economy without the services of CFO Roland Lawrence and COO Rob Cissell. Walmart announced their simultaneous departure, but did not identify replacements.

  • Report: Tenuous retail recovery continues as employment gains accelerate

    Chicago — A report released by Chicago-based Jones Lang LaSalle found that the retail sector is edging toward recovery driven by growth in job market, gains in corporate profits and improvements in credit markets.

    According to Jones Lang LaSalle’s North America Mid-Year Retail Outlook, the environment is still not without risk as rising fuel costs and a continued weak housing market, coupled with an increasingly volatile global geopolitical climate, continue to slow retail recovery as consumers remain tentatively cautious. 

  • Dollar General making its way to the Golden State

    GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General announced its plans to expand its operations to California in 2012.

    The California announcement comes on the heels of the company’s planned expansions into three new states in 2011 — Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire. California would be Dollar General’s 39th state.

    The company said it plans to serve shoppers in rural, suburban and metropolitan markets.

  • Cinema de Lux opens at Ridge Hill

    Yonkers, N.Y.  — Forest City Enterprises announced that National Amusements’ Cinema de Lux has opened at its Westchester’s Ridge Hill mixed-use development in Yonkers, N.Y.

    With 12 state-of-the-art auditoriums and wall-to-wall screens, Cinema de Lux also features the area’s first full-service restaurant, Studio 3. The opening comes just a few months before the first buyers prepare to move into their new homes at Monarch at Ridge Hill, the luxury condominium on Ridge Hill Boulevard. 

  • Big Lots ventures into Canada, 4Q comps slip

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the first time, Big Lots is expanding its retail operations outside of the United States with the announcement that it has agreed to purchase all of the outstanding stock of Liquidation World Inc., an Ontario based retailer which operates 92 closeout stores in Canada. 

  • Ackman takes “passive” stake in Family Dollar

    New York — Bill Ackman, the founder of Pershing Square Capital Management, has taken a “passive” stake in Family Dollar Stores, Bloomberg reported.  Ackman, speaking at the Ira Sohn Conference in New York, said he invested in Family Dollar Stores  because it’s “very reasonably priced” and may be acquired.

    “It’s a good business, it’s done very well for a long time,” he said, according to the report. “It’s an attractive LBO transaction.” 

  • Report: India closer to allowing foreign retail investment

    New Delhi, India  — A Thursday report by Bloomberg said that India will announce new rules for foreign investment in retail by April 2012, which will pave the way for Wal-Mart Stores and Carrefour SA to open stores in the country.

     “We are much further down the process than people think,” said Junior Trade Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in an interview with Bloomberg. “I think it is a huge opportunity” for India. 

  • A tale of two meetings at all-day affair

    Walmart is scheduled to hold its annual shareholders’ meeting one week from today, and the event is a tale of two meetings. One the one hand, there is the pageantry and puffery of the actual shareholders meeting, which runs from 7 a.m. to about 11 a.m. central time. If the company holds true to form the event will be a high-energy, star-studded affair that is long on style and short on substance with a dollop of official business thrown in. The event is designed primarily for the thousands of employees who attend from throughout the U.S.
