  • A Fresh Look at Supply Chain

    The New Year poses more opportunities for retailers to grow profits by shrinking costs, and taking a fresh look at the supply chain can provide the surest avenues to enhanced bottom lines. Chain Store Age talked with Ryder Supply Chain Solutions’ Chris Merritt about supply chain trends and methods for strategically reducing expense.

    What do you see as overriding trends in retail supply chain?

  • Bed Bath & Beyond Q3 profit rises 28%

    Union, N.J. -- Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. reported Wednesday that profit for the quarter ended Nov. 26 rose 28% to $228.5 million, compared with $188.6 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenue rose 6.8% to $2.3 billion, from $2.2 billion a year earlier. Same-store sales increased 4.1%.

    During the quarter, the company opened seven Bed Bath & Beyond stores, seven Buybuy Baby stores, one Christmas Tree Shops store and one Harmon Face Values store.

  • AEO expands in the Middle East

    PITTSBURGH — With the opening of stores in the new international markets of Morocco, Jordan and Egypt, as well as expansion plans in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, American Eagle Outfitters is establishing quite a presence in the Middle East.

  • Focus on: Loss Prevention

    Despite the challenges in its category, Birmingham, Ala.-based book retailer Books-A-Million has embarked on an aggressive growth plan that added 41 new units to its store count in October and November 2011. The expansion, which put the 250-store retailer squarely in the No. 2 bookseller slot after Borders’ liquidation earlier in the year, has been accompanied by a newly honed focus on improving its loss-prevention program system-wide.

  • First Data mid-month overview: Card spending growth solid

    Atlanta -- The SpendTrend report released Wednesday by First Data Corp., which tracks same-store consumer spending by credit, signature debit, PIN debit, EBT cards and checks at U.S. merchant locations, showed that card spending growth has remained solid through mid December.

  • Borders win court approval of plan to dissolve

    New York City -- Borders Group Inc. won court approval of the final details of its plans to dissolve, according to Bloomberg.

    The bankruptcy judge finalized terms of creditor repayments Tuesday after five remaining objections were resolved, the report said. Unsecured creditors with $812 million to $850 million in claims will recover from 4% to 10%, probably “at the higher end of the range,” according to court papers.
     

  • Year-end Review: New York’s Best Store Revamps

    New York City -- It’s true: Everything old is new again. New York City’s retail maven, Faith Hope Consolo, chairman of Prudential Douglas Elliman’s Retail Leasing, Marketing & Sales Division, has put together a list of her favorite store makeovers of the past year. As Consolo notes, even the most iconic stores must constantly present a new, fresh face to keep shoppers coming. Here are her faves:

  • Visa Survey: 77% of Americans haven’t finished shopping

    San Francisco -- A new survey conducted this past weekend by Visa Inc. shows that 77% of consumers still need to buy holiday gifts this week. These last-minute shoppers will spend an average of $278 in the final days leading up to Christmas and Hanukkah.
