  • Study: Mobile shoppers stay home

    Reston, Va. – Despite the popular image of “showrooming” mobile shoppers using their devices to find better prices on in-store items, 85% of consumers actively shop with a mobile device from home, even if other devices are available. In addition, the “Mobile Spend in 2015” study from Contact Solutions shows that 26% of consumers do in fact showroom, while 27% will make mobile purchases from a store they are shopping in.

  • Report: Staples, Office Depot discuss merger

    Framingham, Mass. – The office supply retail vertical may be in for more consolidation. According to the Wall Street Journal, Staples Inc. and Office Depot Inc. are in the “advanced stages” of negotiations to combine the two biggest U.S. office supply chains.

  • Macy's acquires 60-store beauty retailer Bluemercury

    Cincinnati -- In its first acquisition in 10 years, Macy’s has signed an agreement to acquire luxury beauty products retailer Bluemercury for $210 million in cash. The privately held Bluemercury, based in Washington, D.C., currently operates about 60 specialty stores in 18 states, primarily in prime street-level locations and urban lifestyle centers. Most locations include in-house spas. The company also operates an online business.

  • EBay to enter equipment and industrial live auction marketplace

    San Jose, Calif. – Tractors are a long way from Pez dispensers, but EBay is entering the equipment and industrial live online auction space. EBay and online marketplace platform provider Proxibid are partnering to make heavy equipment, industrial machinery, farm equipment, cars and trucks accessible via live auctions on the EBay marketplace using Proxbid’s software solutions and bidding technology.

  • Target taps Tesco vet for digital transformation

    Target’s goal of becoming a leading omnichannel retailer will be led by Tesco veteran Mike McNamara who joins the company as executive vice president and chief information officer.

  • Most shoppers skeptical about data protection by retailers

    Los Angeles -- American shoppers feel they can’t trust retailers to protect their credit card and personal information either online or in brick-and-mortar stores.  According to a survey by Bizrate Insights, 62% of shoppers agreed that "Current security to protect credit card and personal information at a retailers’ brick-and-mortar stores isn’t strong enough.”

    This was only marginally worse than concerns for security on websites (60% agree) but better that mobile transactions (65% agree).

  • Macy's details new growth initiatives

    Luxury beauty retailer Bluemercury was acquired by Macy’s and the retailer announced another round of extensive personnel changes, including a new head merchant, that are designed to bolster its omnichannel, international and alternative format growth prospects.

    Macy’s said it signed an agreement to acquire the 60 store specialty retailer Bluemercury for $210 million and would continue to operate the company as a standalone business while infusing existing Macy’s stores with the specialty retailer’s high end brands.
