  • NPD Group releases holiday spending survey results

    The NPD Group has released the results of its holiday spending survey, the 12th annual survey of consumers’ holiday spending intentions. According to the report, the majority of consumers intend to spend the same as or more than last year, with fewer saying they plan to spend less.

    This year’s results found that 12% of U.S. consumers who were surveyed plan to spend more, while 67% said they plan to spend about the same and 21% said they plan to spend less.

  • Report: Gap selects new Australian franchisee

    San Francisco – Gap Inc. has reportedly signed a non-binding agreement for Australia-based Oroton Group to take control of its franchise operation in Australia, New Zealand, and some Pacific islands. According to the Wall Street Journal, Oroton Group will start running Gap’s three franchise stores in Australia in November 2013 and purchase some inventory and store fixtures from current Gap franchisee Brand Republic Pty Ltd.

  • Survey: J.Crew.com tops in overall customer service

    New York -- J.Crew ranked No. 1 overall in customer service in September for the third consecutive month, in a monthly survey by StellaService, the independent ratings provider that ranks online retailers according to their customer service. StellaService measures companies monthly across four service areas: phone, email, shipping and returns.

  • Art Van Furniture opening in Fort Wayne, Ind.

    Warren, Mich. — Art Van Furniture has announced the opening of a 46,000-sq.-ft. store in Fort Wayne, Ind., across the street from the Glen brook Mall in January.

    With 50 stores across Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois, Art Van Furniture is the Midwest’s largest furniture retailer.

  • Macy's leverages social media to generate Black Friday buzz

    Macy’s plans to get a jump on Black Friday and break tradition by opening the doors to most of its locations nationwide at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving evening, making it the first time in its history that the retailer will be open for business on the holiday.

    Limited-time specials in every department for hundreds of items include exclusive fragrances, name-brand apparel and kitchen gadgets. Macy's will also donate $2 to Make-a-Wish, up to $100,000, for any One Direction "Our Moment" fragrance purchase beginning at opening for Black Friday.

  • GE Capitol and Penney extend credit card program

    Stamford, Conn. -- GE Capital Retail Bank announced a long-term extension of its private label and dual card credit program with J.C. Penney Co.

    Launched in 1999, the credit card program is managed by GE Capital’s Retail Finance business and available for purchases at any of the nearly 1,100 J.C. Penney stores across the United States and Puerto Rico.

  • Bon-Ton opens Carson’s Clearance Center

    York, Pa. -- The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. will open a 21,000-sq.-ft. Carson’s Store Clearance Center located at The Landings Shopping Center in Lansing, Ill., on Oct. 19. Bon-Ton operates 272 department stores, which includes 10 furniture galleries, in 25 states in the Northeast, Midwest and upper Great Plains under the Bon-Ton, Bergner’s, Boston Store, Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s and Younkers nameplates.

  • Macy’s stores across U.S. to open on Thanksgiving for first time

    New York – In a sign of just how competitive the upcoming holiday season is expected to be, Macy’s said that most of its stores will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving evening. It’s the first time in its history that the company will be open for business on the holiday.
