  • Winn-Dixie opens transformational store replete with Hispanic influence

    MIAMI — Winn-Dixie Stores on Tuesday celebrated the completion of its seventh state-of-the-art transformational store and the first to have a bilingual décor package.

  • Retail sales see small increase for September

    WASHINGTON — Retail sales edged up slightly during the month of October, the U.S. Census Bureau announced Tuesday.

    Adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, sales totaled $397.7 billion. Retail trade sales rose 0.6% above September and 7.3% above the year-ago period.

    Adjusted grocery store sales increased to $46.8 million from $46.3 million in September, while health and personal care stores saw adjusted sales of $23.3 million from $23.1 million last month.

    HONOLULU — Walmart is firming its commitment to Asia Pacific economies, the company announced at the annual Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in Honolulu, Hawaii, Nov. 11 to 14. 

  • Safeway hosts numerous events to honor nation's vets

    PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway dedicated Veterans Day weekend to pay tribute to past and present service members and raise money for an organization that provides programs and outreach to those who were severely injured while serving their country.

    Beginning Veterans Day, Nov.  11 through Nov. 13, all U.S. Safeway stores helped raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project.

  • Family Dollar enters California

    Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar has entered the state of California, opening four stores, in Ontario, Rialto, Riverside and Fontana.

    The discounter plans to open 450-500 new stores in fiscal 2012.

  • Starbucks buys juice company, plans to roll out new concept

    Seattle -- Starbucks Corp. announced Thursday plans to reinvent the $1.6 billion premium juice market with its all-cash purchase of San Bernadino, Calif.-based Evolution Fresh for $30 million.

    The acquisition, which is part of a strategy to move beyond coffee into the health and wellness segment, gives Starbucks a path to open new health-and-wellness stores in the coming year, it said, although Starbucks has not yet revealed many stores it will open, their location or the name.

  • 99 Cents Only has big store plans, 2Q comps up 6.7%

    CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — A strong earnings and sales performance during its fiscal second quarter gave 99 Cents Only Stores the confidence to raise its full year guidance and become more aggressive with store growth. The company reported that total retail sales increased 9% to $352.2 million and same-store sales increased 6.7% for the second quarter. Consolidated net income increased by $2.2 million to $15.1 million or 21 cents per diluted share, versus $12.9 million in the prior year, or 18 cents per diluted share

  • Walmart denies exploring primary care healthcare platform

    Bentonville, Ark. -- According to a Request for Information released Tuesday and reported by Kaiser Health News, Walmart is in the process of piecing together a comprehensive low-cost primary care healthcare platform.
