  • Amazon getting boozy — but only in Seattle

    New York -- Not only is Amazon.com launching its one-hour Prime Now delivery service in its hometown of Seattle, but it's also adding a whole new category of deliverable products.

    The retailer announced Tuesday it will add wine, beer and spirits to its assortment of eligible products for Prime Now delivery.

    With the launch of Prime Now in Seattle, it's the first U.S. city to include alcohol in the assortment of products eligible for the quick-delivery service.

    Dollar General is trying to launch a literacy revolution in in its home state of Tennessee.

    The retailer presented a surprise check to students, teachers and administrators at H.B. Williams Elementary in White House, Tenn., for $50,000 to support literacy initiatives at the school.

    "Reading is critical to a child's success in school and in life. We hope this gift will help infuse a renewed excitement about reading and strengthen the literacy programs available to the students," said Denine Torr, senior director of Community Initiatives at Dollar General.

  • The Fresh Market is wilting under competitive pressures

    The Fresh Market is not so fresh anymore to shoppers, if the retailer's second quarter results are any indication.

    The upscale grocery chain reported that same-store sales decreased 1% for the second quarter ended July 26, and the retailer expects an even bigger decrease in the next quarter, both below analysts' estimates. 

    The company reported 36 cents EPS for the quarter, missing analysts’ estimates of 40 cents. Net income rose 53.5% to $17.5 million, while net sales increased 4.7% to $442.1 million.
