  • Bidding war ensues over foreclosed strip mall

    Glen Valley Center’s taxable value had fallen to $776,221 since 2013, and the foreclosed, 35,775-sq.-ft. strip center in Caledonia, Michigan, had been the property of Wells Fargo Bank since 2007. So why did the bank walk away with $2.3 million for the center after a bidding war erupted among six buyers?   “We have a huge lack of product for investors to put their money in," explained Mark Ansara to mlive.com, which recently ran a report on the sale consummated at the end of June.  
  • Major convenience store/gas station buyer emerges

    Durham, North Carolina-based conglomerate The Guess Corp. is seeking to acquire at least 1,000 U.S. convenience store/ gas station units in the next 12 months.   Working through a subsidiary, the company is looking to acquire an average of 100 branded and unbranded units per month. Upon completion of the purchases, Guess Corp. intends to re-brand and renovate the properties with innovative and sleek designs and provide enhanced CRM technology. The company has invited brokers to provide buyer representation with higher commissions.
  • C-store chain expanding

    Sheetz is opening four stores in four different states.   The family-owned convenience store chain announced four new locations: Morgantown, West Virginia; Morrisville, North Carolina; St. Clairsville, Ohio; and Bethel, Pennsylvania. All will open by July, 7.

  • New Baltimore industrial hub announces retail development

    Tradepoint Atlantic, a 3,100-acre industrial hub now taking shape in Baltimore Harbor, this week unveiled plans for a 130-acre, mixed-use retail park on the former site of the nation’s largest steelmaking facility.   FedEx has signed a lease for a 300,000 sq.-ft. distribution facility and Harley-Davidson will move its training facility to the site, which offers 3,000 ft. of frontage on I-695 and exposure to 43,000 households in the surrounding area.  
  • Lower costs equal higher Q4 profits at Casey’s; store growth planned

    Casey’s General Stores Inc. reported increased net income and decreased revenue during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2016.

    The retailer also said it plans to build or acquire 77 to 116 new stores, among other goals for fiscal 2017.

    In the fourth quarter, Casey’s reported net income of $47.04 million, up 14% from $41.34 million the same period the prior year. Total revenue fell 4% to $1.58 billion, from $1.65 billion. A significant reduction in cost of goods sold offset increases in operating and other expenses, resulting in higher profits.

    Fabulous Freddy’s, an eight-unit retail chain headquartered in Las Vegas, provides customers with a little bit of everything.   “We’re a full-service car wash, express lube operation, gas station and convenience store,” said Jeff Warwick, VP and CFO of Fabulous Freddy’s, during an interview with Chain Store Age. “We’re always exploring opportunities to lease store space to franchises or operate in-store franchises ourselves.”

    A career that began in 1974 as a Giant Eagle supermarket clerk will end on June 30, 2016 as one of the company’s most instrumental figures in recent decades, president and COO John Lucot, will retire after 42 years of service to the Pittsburgh-area grocer.

    Walmart is launching a new tool to give shoppers more reasons to use their Walmart credit and prepaid cards.
