  • Conn's names new CEO, sells off bad debt

    Conn’s is selling off much of its consumer debt and appointing a new CEO as the specialty retailer looks reposition its business.

    In a series of strategic moves designed to shore up its ailing consumer finance business and restore investor confidence, Conn’s has named Norman Miller as its new CEO, entered into an agreement to securitize $1.4 billion of retail installment contract receivables, and received board authorization to repurchase up to $75 million of securities, and termination of the stockholders’ rights plan.

    San Francisco -- Come October, consumers will be able to buy clothing and other goods on their Apple TV.

    In its never-ending quest to wind its way deeper into people’s homes, Apple Inc. on Wednesday unveiled a new version of its Apple TV, the set-top box device that lets viewers stream live video through such sources as Netflix and Hulu. In the most talked-about update, the device will now come with its own App Store, featuring apps for TV and video viewing, games, sports — and shopping.

  • Tween, teen fave going really big in Philadelphia

    Philadelphia – Five Below is opening its largest location to date, in its home city of Philadelphia.
     
    The extreme-value retailer, which targets tweens and teens with goods priced at $5 or less, will open a two-story, 13,000-sq.-ft. store next to its headquarters on Thursday, Sept. 10.

  • Roosevelt Field enters its final stage of redevelopment

    Garden City, N.Y. -- Simon announced that Roosevelt Field, located in Garden City, New York, has entered its final stages of redevelopment, and also released the names of retail brands to occupy the new two-level retail wing. Most of the stores, with some opening early September, will make their Long Island debut. The new wing will lead to the area's first Neiman Marcus store opening in February 2016.

    New York -- Disney unleashed its considerable marketing prowess on Friday and retailers were hoping the company’s “force” would translate into big sales.

    On Friday, the entertainment giant formally debuted hundreds of toys and other products related to its upcoming — and hugely anticipated — film, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
