  • Charming Charlie to open at Kentucky Oaks Mall

    Paducah, Ky. -- Youngstown, Ohio-based Cafaro Co. announced that Charming Charlie will open a new fashion accessories store at Kentucky Oaks Mall, in Paducah, Ky.

    The Houston-based retailer will open a 7,000-sq.-ft. store in late spring 2011. This will be the second Charming Charlie store in Kentucky, the first being located in the Lexington area.

    Hollywood, Fla. -- Perry Ellis said it has opened a men’s fashion store in Seminole Paradise at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

  • MasterCard Advisors: Total U.S. retail sales for January up 5.5%

    New York City -- Total retail sales (excluding autos) grew by 5.5% year-over-year, on par with December’s growth rate, and slightly higher than November’s, according to MasterCard Advisors’ SpendingPulse. SpendingPulse reports on national retail and services sales and is based on aggregate sales activity in the MasterCard payments network, coupled with survey-based estimates for all other payment forms

  • Fire damages Abercrombie & Fitch’s New York flagship

    New York City -- Abercrombie & Fitch’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York City will be temporarily closed after a two-alarm fire last night damaged the building.

    More than 25 units and 125 firefighters responded to the blaze, which began about 11 p.m. local time last night.

  • New restaurant leases signed at Festival at Manchester Lakes

    Franconia, Va. -- Jacksonville, Fla.-based Regency Centers said it has leased restaurant space in Franconia, Va., to two new retailers at Festival at Manchester Lakes.

    Dunkin’ Donuts has leased 1,800 sq. ft., and Genghis Grill, a build-your-own bowl, fast casual, Asian stir-fry concept, has leased 4,443 sq. ft., bringing the center to 95% leased. Both restaurants plan to open this spring.

    New York City -- Information Builders, a provider of business intelligence solutions, announced that Helzberg Diamonds has standardized on the WebFocus BI platform to provide advanced analysis and reporting capabilities to managers at 230 stores across the United States.

  • Riley out at Children's Place, search for CFO begins

    SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Children's Place Retail Stores announced that Susan Riley, EVP finance and administration, is leaving the company. The company said it will eliminate the position of EVP finance and administration and has begun a search for a CFO.

    John Taylor, VP finance, will assume the position of interim principal financial dfficer and Bernard McCracken, VP controller, will assume the position of interim principal accounting officer.

  • Reinvented Department Stores and Malls See Robust Rebound

    Department stores and shopping centers malls are gaining market share for the first time in three decades, according to consultants Customer Growth Partners, and this month most will report their best annual earnings in years -- if not ever.

    “Department stores from Macy’s to Nordstrom, and mall operators from Macerich to Simon, have used the recession not just to cut costs, but to reinvent themselves,” said Craig Johnson, president, Customer Growth Partners, a consulting and research firm serving retail and other consumer industries.
