  • Hibbett Sports Q1 earnings surge 23%, to open 40 net new stores

    Birmingham, Ala. -- Hibbett Sports Inc. reported Friday that net income for the quarter ended April 30 rose 23% to $21.3 million, compared with $17.3 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenue increased 10.4% to $203.7 million, beating analysts’ projected $200.8 million in revenue. 

    During the quarter, Hibbett opened eight new stores, expanded four others and closed seven underperforming stores. During the rest of the fiscal year, Hibbett said it expects to open between 50 and 55 new stores, close 10 to 15 stores and expand another 15 stores.

  • Aeropostale profit plummets in Q1

    New York City – Aeropostale reported Thursday that net income for the first quarter decreased 64% to $16.4 million, compared to $45.4 million last year.

    Revenue rose 1% to $469.2 million, from $463.6 million. Same-store sales decreased 7%.

    The company opened nine Aeropostale and seven P.S. from Aeropostale stores, and closed one Aeropostale store during the quarter.

  • Gap earnings fall 23% on soaring costs; CEO to focus turning around namesake division

    San Francisco -- Gap reported Thursday that its first-quarter earnings plummeted 23% as costs rose faster than expected, and the chain dramatically lowered its full-year earnings forecast.

    Gap is spending about 20% more to produce each item than it did a year ago -- a much faster rise than it expected, the Associated Press reported.

    Gap’s net income was $233 million for the quarter ended April 30, compared with $302 million. The performance was slightly better than analysts expected, however.

  • Ross Stores profit up 22% in Q1

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Ross Stores said Thursday that profit for the quarter ended April 30 surged 22% to $173 million, compared with $142.3 million a year earlier.

    Sales increased 7% to $2.1 billion, and same-store sales rose 3% on top of a 10% gain in 2010.

  • Report: Lower Manhattan shopping corridor shows 23% rise in average asking rents

    New York City -- A report released Thursday by the Real Estate Board of New York showed that some of New York City’s primary shopping corridors are seeing increases in asking rents for available retail space, while others are seeing rents plateau.

  • Hot Topic loss widens in Q1

    City of Industry, Calif. -- Hot Topic reported Wednesday that its loss for the fiscal first quarter widened to $7.7 million, compared to a net loss of $1.8 million last year.

    The first quarter results include $12.4 million of expenses for the implementation of the previously announced charges for strategic business changes and cost reduction plan.

    Revenue dipped 0.8% to $161.3 million compared with $162.6 million for the first quarter last year. Same-store sales edged up 0.2%.

  • Sears Holdings meets low expectations in Q1

    HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Sears Holdings reported a first-quarter net loss of $170 million, or $1.58 per diluted share, in line with the company's expectations for a net loss in the range of $145 million and $195 million, or between $1.35 and $1.81 per diluted share. The company reported net income of $16 million, or 14 cents per diluted share, in 2010.

  • New York & Co. narrows loss in Q1

    New York City -- New York & Co. reported Thursday a loss of $3.7 million in the first quarter, compared with a loss of $4.9 million a year ago.

    Sales rose to $239.4 million from $237 million. Same-store sales increased 2.5%.

    The company said it expects to close eight stores and remodel six existing locations, ending the second quarter of fiscal year 2011 with 545 stores, including 24 outlet stores.
