  • DSW closes on Town Shoes acquisition

    DSW has closed on its acquisition of Town Shoes Limited, the largest footwear and accessories retailer in Canada, for $68.7 million (USD) in cash. DSW acquired a 49.2% interest in Town Shoes from certain clients of Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) and other minority shareholders.

    DSW's initial stake provides 50% voting control and board representation equal to the primary remaining shareholder, Callisto Capital. Peter J. Solomon Company served as financial advisor to DSW Inc.

  • MIT Sloan visiting professor finds behavioral motives key to pricing strategy

    Cambridge, Mass. -- An ongoing debate in retail is whether it’s a better strategy to use markdowns or everyday low prices. Research by MIT Sloan School of Management visiting professor Özalp Özer and his colleague Karen Zheng at MIT Sloan supports basing pricing strategy on consumer behavior compared to a one-size-fits-all approach.

  • Cache shrinks net loss in Q1

    New York – A shrinking net loss was the only positive result from the tough first quarter fiscal 2014 numbers posted by Cache Inc. Net loss shrank to $10.8 million from $17.8 million in the same quarter a year earlier.

    Cache’s net sales dropped 11% to $47.4 million, from $53.5 million. Same-store sales declined 8.9%, with the shift in Easter contributing. Jay Margolis, chairman and CEO of Cache, tried to strike an encouraging tone.

  • Build-A-Bear Workship adds new board member

    St. Louis -- Build-A-Bear Workshop said that Michael Shaffer has been appointed to the company’s board of directors.

    Shaffer, 51, will serve as chairman of the audit committee and a member of the nominating and corporate governance committee. He is executive VP, COO and CFO for New York-based PVH Corp. where he oversees the retail division, treasury, corporate finance, information technology, and logistics services.

  • Isaac Mizrahi New York completed omnichannel strategy with e-commerce site

    New York -- Xcel Brands announced the launch of the first Isaac Mizrahi New York e-commerce website, IsaacMizrahi.com.

    Phase one of the user-friendly website will offer a wide array of Isaac Mizrahi New York product offerings including women's sportswear, dresses, footwear, handbags, eyewear, watches, tech accessories and fragrance. Additionally, a dedicated section of the website will consolidate the brand's recent social media feeds, providing a view into what inspires Isaac's style.

  • CBL sells Lakeshore Mall

    Atlanta — CBL & Associates Properties has closed the sale of Lakeshore Mall to a private investor for $14 million. JLL brokered the transaction.

    Belk, Bealls, Kmart, J.C. Penney and Carmike Cinema anchor the 490,086-sq.-ft. retail center in Sebring, Florida. A nearby Sears is a shadow anchor.

    With its 95% occupancy rate, Lakeshore Mall anchors the retail hub that serves central Florida along U.S. Highway 27, the major north-south thoroughfare. Traffic counts average about 38,500 vehicles per day.

     

  • MasterCard: Retail sales show broad-based recovery in April

    Purchase, N.Y. -- After several months of sluggish retail sales, consumer shopping in the U.S. rebounded in April, according to the latest MasterCard SpendingPulse report, which aggregate national retail sales activity in the MasterCard payments network, coupled with estimates for all other payment forms, including cash and check.
