  • Walmart throws weight into home improvement

    The world’s largest retailer is taking steps to display its home improvement prowess through a digital marketing campaign centered on a “Projects Made Simple” area at Walmart.com.

    The area is organized by home improvement project. For instance: how to stain a deck, install a water filter system, caulk a window or install a towel bar. In the deck video, an unidentified handy-man narrator explains, “All the tools are available at Walmart to get you going."

  • Home Depot profit climbs 27.5% in Q1, sales miss Street

    Atlanta -- Home Depot reported Tuesday that profit for the first quarter rose a healthy 27.5% to $1.04 billion, aided by warmer weather during the period.

    Sales rose 6% to $17.81 billion from $16.8 billion, missing analysts’ forecasted $17.89 billion in revenue. The company boosted its 2012 outlook based on year-to-date performance. Same-store sales increased 5.8% in the quarter, with a strong 6.1% gain in the United States.
     

  • Harbor Freight to expand to Connecticut

    New Haven, Conn. -- RHYS Commercial said that Harbor Freight Tools is opening three Connecticut locations – in New Haven (17,000 sq. ft.), Bridgeport (14,284 sq. ft.) and Waterbury (16,813 sq. ft.).

    The tool and equipment retailer’s location in New Haven opened April 27; construction is underway on the other two outlets.

  • The Tile Shop to open New York store

    New York -- Dallas-based SRS Real Estate Partners said it has negotiated a 21,191-sq.-ft. lease for The Tile Shop in Scarsdale, N.Y., in affluent Westchester County.

    The new store, slated to open this summer, is the retailer’s first in the area.
     

  • Bed Bath & Beyond to acquire Cost Plus

    Union, N.J. -- Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. said that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Cost Plus in an all cash transaction. The deal is valued at some $495 million, according to Reuters.

    Based in Oakland, Calif., Cost Plus currently operates 259 stores under the names World Market, Cost Plus World Market, Cost Plus Imports, and World Market Stores in 30 states.

  • Ikea launches construction on its largest North American store

    Ontario -- Ikea said Tuesday that it has begun construction on the expansion of its current Montreal store to what will be its largest store in North America.

    Set to be complete summer 2013, the new Ikea Montreal will be 469, 694 sq. ft. and will feature expanded inventory and services such as a 600-seat restaurant and 1,400+ parking spots.

  • Cabela’s to open store on property owned by Green Bay Packers

    New York -- Cabela’s plans to open a store in Ashwaubenon, Wis., on property owned by the Green Bay Packers. The store is scheduled to open in the summer of 2013, with construction to begin this fall.
